The Goon Thread

I think we’d all rather be challenging for the title than finishing 17th but they have spent an awful lot of money and have nothing to show for it so far. I do wish we would spend more and be smarter with how we spend but they’ve not actually achieved any tangible success from all their spending. They have as many trophies as we had under Poch when we challenged for the big honours.
We won’t challenge anyone with our transfers and our reluctance to spend and compete for players that would improve the team in the here and now. Not spending lots of money on players that may come good…eventually or more than likely never.

..."even if their taunting of Partey was always delivered with the sort of gleeful relish that does not exactly scream concern for the alleged victims of sexual violence."

This is a particular key and cutting line. It's going to be true of any club, but a lot of posts about the situation are joyful at the chance to criticise an Arsenal player rather than being sincerely upset about what has happened (allegedly?). It's slimy AF and doesn't reflect well on football fans in general.

It's hugely problematic for Arsenal, especially when staff are getting fired for social media players. But then it'd be a minefield if people lost their jobs based on accusations, you'd genuinely get unfounded claims targeting specific players before key games...No doubt every fan of every other club will think that their club would've done the right thing whilst L'arse fans would probably tow the line

That must have been a difficult article for the Islington Guardian to publish.

Sadly I think the first paragraph is fairly accurate. A lot of football fans will use any edge they can to get a rise out of a player or taunt rival fans. The alleged victims shouldn’t be forgotten or marginalised for the sake of goading a club or a player.

And yes I do also agree that a lot of clubs would have handled it in a similar fashion. However, various other clubs have been put in somewhat similar positions by their players doing things which aren’t ok and they have handled it far differently, suspending players for example. Arsenal have handled this entire episode dreadfully and they deserve to be criticised for it no matter who you support. I’m shocked they aren’t getting more criticism.

Arsenal have
But they also can’t win until he is charged … and 3 years.
I watched 24hours on police custody the other night and the guy was a serial offender with video and photos and they only ended up doing a deal for one case and other misdemeanours. Shambles iMO big shows how hard it is to get that conviction and why it takes time I guess
Where they have failed …. Massively … is with the victims. That’s where the issue lies because no matter what happens there is a reason why those people went to the police

There's no settled law on this stuff, but most of the legal advice is that when he was arrested, suspension on full pay would have been the best solution.

From an employment law standpoint, it's considered a neutral action, so they wouldn't be liable to later civil suits. It also covers them as they're protecting potentially vulnerable employees and customers from a potentially dangerous employee.

I guarantee that's what they would have done if he'd been a youth team or bit part player.

Was he charged?
That’s only happened recently
There was no way they would pay him whilst suspending him

You can’t suspend someone without pay (apart from in a few limited scenarios). Hence suspension with pay is a standard course of action in serious disciplinary cases.
But as you say, not for that lot.
To mangle a master “If money/winning the title be the prevailing factor, play on.”

I’m not trying to defend them but this IMO was a no win
And if we’re honest, as fans of the game, these charges are the most I’ve ever seen for a player.
It’s multiple cases so it’s very very severe and serious

Can somebody make their buying of Madueke make sense to me please?

If not, no worries...i will resume my laughing anyhow...
They need options
Their squad wasn’t as strong as people thought
What I don’t get is why they haven’t signed Gyokeres considering he has already brought a London mansion for a £1m according to their ITKs
Eze for them on the left would be the smart buy. Instant starter and brings the unpredictability they lack
They do have PSR issues every summer though so I think they are juggling that balance
