Nah, I don't think it's highest level but do think that the players see it as incredibly important, if not the pinnacle. Certainly, those south american players see winning the WC as the ultimate. I do think we over rate the PL entertainment. It can be dull as ditchwater but as soon as we have one boring international game, you see the complete double standard. GHod forbid anyone slates the PL.

My theory is still that until the officials start following the laws of the game, football will be less entertaining than it should be. The dark arts are winning over the skill and it would be so easy to make it incredibly entertaining again. Other problem is Sky think they're the product and not the 22 players, the ball and the 2 goalposts. They don't even show the skill at half time or full time anymore. They just talk about VAR.
The PL isn't even particularly good at the moment in regards quality. Where are the world class players? Overall technique in the Prem is probably higher than its ever been but the ceiling of ability is much lower. Are there even any exceptional players?

I saw a better standard of football at the last WC than I have in the PL this season.

I rarely listen to TS, but I had it on at work the other day and Cundy and Ohara said the same (Yes I was horrified in agreeing with them)

It is all crab football, no superstars, not really any off your seat goals anymore either

When was the last team that won the PL that play freeflowing football? City were very good, but you could watch till 2-0 then switch off, dull dull football

You do make a good point, i have been watching football for a very long time but if i am honest i think the game [ as a whole] is not as exciting or as good as it used to be. Its like watching a game of chess with most of the games slow and boring. Its no longer the game i grew up with and except for my lifelong love of Spurs i rarely watch a lot of the games of other teams.

I cant recall the last time I watched a whole game on TV that didn't involve Spurs/Wimbledon/England just sends me to sleep

Liverpool absolutely deserve the title this season, but this is the worst they have played for years

Where is there a good standard of football? We just played the 3rd best team in Germany as things stand and they were brick and deservedly beaten by our shambles of a team

There isn't any really, La Liga is decent still a bit more technical and Barcelona are something maybe a bit special but the overall standard of league football isn't at a prestige moment.

I think football is going through a 'quality lull' due to the sheer amount of time players have played globally the last three years. With FIFA's pathetic Club World Cup, pre-season tournaments thousands of miles away, and a World Cup next season, the game needs to make some drastic changes with regards to squad sizes and subs IMO.

I also wonder about the PFA initiating a 'per season minutes' rule where players can only play a certain amount of minutes per agreed time-frame? It would enforce rotation and protect the welfare of players. It's an idea which would need modifications I'm sure, but the principle stands if we want to protect the game itself and the players...

Again a great point. I think society as a whole is so obsessed with 'winning' -and the bodies running it with money/financial rewards- that the journey there gets overlooked. The game is as much about business as glory, which is an absolute tragedy.

That is true.

I think what is also true is that if the game was officiated to the laws, we'd see way more entertainment. Imagine that famous Maradona goal happening against Pep's City nowadays. He picks up the ball on the half way line and 1 second later he is tripped, or petty fouled whilst he's running with the ball. One thing for sure, he's not getting near that 18 yard box and scoring a worldie. The ref would just give a free kick and the game would move on. There would be no lecture from the ref. There would be no yellow card. It's just business as usual for all 23 people on that pitch.

Now imagine the parallel universe where the officials used the laws and player / manager behaviours had to change. The product would be amazing and even better than in the past where they were overly physical.

There ain't a single player in the PL now where I think "wow! He's special!"

I heard some show or podcast discussing this recently.. If you were creating the latest FIFA game and had to put the 3 PL (or 3 world) superstars on the cover of the game, It's not an clear and obvious choice nowadays, Especially compared to the 00s for example.
