***OMT*** Tottenham...Thursday Night In Frankfurt

Careful, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I've always said 16/17 was the optimum of our club in recent times. That is when we were genuinely a good team.
Moussa Dembele glued the Poch team together. Absolute monster of a footballer. That ability to just take the ball off the defence, hold off pressing opposition players while just gliding past them and then wang a pass into Eriksen, Kane, Son or Dele was the cornerstone of that team.

And don’t forget he wasn’t a starter for Poch for some time

Yes, and Big Vic was his perfect partner, hence the 16/17 observation. That was also the summer we lost Walker. We were never as good again in my opinion.

I think it took some time to convert / convince Mousa that centre mid was his natural place. At Fulham was an inside left winger and had even played number 9 earlier in his career.
He played CM there under Jol
And has also played it with us before poch
It was a combo of things that we won’t know

Dier played a lot of games in DM alongside Dembele that season and the season before. Dier was an underrated part of the dynamic of that team in dropping into a 3 at the back when Walker and Rose bombed forward. The other thing about that team was how huge they were think Eriksen, Lamela, and Rose only regulars under 6ft and both Eriksen and Lamela were 5ft 11.

Well here we are, the game of the season. And I have little hope for optimism.

Frankfurt are riding high, 3rd in the bundesliga as we speak, and having tanked Ajax in the last round.
Whist we are going from defeat to defeat and only beating the bottome feeders in the premier league.

Stranger things have happend but with our terrible away form, total lack of cohesion, indivisual mistakes, no leadership
and not plan B in terms of how we play, set up or our selection.

Personally I see a 2-0 defeat on the cards. having been at Molyneux to witness that travisty of a game my level of optimism is at an all time low. We dont look like scoring in our standard patterns of play, we give away tons of chances and then the players make individual mistakes. Its a bloody mess mate. I fully expect us to go out but of course hope we wont. If bolde can do it? and then i expect Ange to get the sack in the morning.

Picking a team makes no difference with our setup. But the fact he dropped Spence last week for Porro had me pulling my hair out. We need much more from our forward players.

Predicted Score: Frankfurt 2 - 0 Tottenham

My line up - but it wont be this:

---------------------Vicario---------------------------
Porro ------ Romero ----- Van De Ven ----- Spence
----------------Bissouma----Bergvail----------------
----------------------KuluSevski----------------------
------Maddison---------------------------Son-------
-----------------------Solanke------------------------

Maddison annoys the hell out of me but he has got goals and assits in his last few games and we are missing that badly. Kulu is much
better in transition and holding onto the ball and has a goal in him. I want them both in. Son will play, that is why he was rested on Sunday
so he can use his energy for this game. Solanke needs to do much better up top.

Johnson gets goals but does not influence the game in possesion or out of possesion much. We are really lacking wide options right now. Odobert is out, Moore has been left out recently and is just a kid.

I would task the full backs with staying closer to the back in this game at the start and let us get into the game. Bergvail has now been robbed and we have conceeded a goal on 3 occasions in the last month, he cant be the last man with no cover.

But I am sure Ange wont change brick and we will be under the cosh. The arrogance of the man and his tactics and the naivety he shows is embarassing. Goodbye season. Thanks for nothing

Dembele was starting CM in Pochettinos 2nd season, 15/16 alongside Dier.

Season prior we used Bentaleb & Mason in CM and Dembele was being touted by fans as an expendable squad player after the emergence of the two youngsters.

Yep, from what I remember the double pivot had guys like Paulinho, Stambouli, Capoue around that time but the youngsters claimed the shirts. I might be wrong, but I thought Dembele was used more further forward when he did play. That was his Fulham position. I also seem to remember him having loads of those ankle niggles and was perhaps struggling to cope with the intensity of the training regime.

Agreed, Dier was massively for us.

I think he actually ended up on the right of Toby in a 3 man defence towards the end of that season when we were battering teams. Son became the super-sub. I have a feeling that Wanyama and Dier both started 40-50 games. I have a sneaky feeling Davies played a fair few as well.

Such a shame that Wanyama and Toby spenty so much of the next season on the sidelines. Trips and Aurier struggled to replace Walker, Davies wasn't at Rose levels and Mousa was not always available either. Winks ankle injurie started as well.

It was Dier that held us together in the 17/18 season.

Looked like he could’ve been the Belgian R9 if it weren’t for the hip injuries.

I remember Poch using Mason and Bentaleb in preference to all of AVB's midfielders, because he wanted a quick transition and to get away from our turgidity. Dembele got on minutes narrow RW, but not much.

But 12 months later, Poch had clearly coached Dembele around judgement on releasing the ball and he suddenly became amazing. So it was his development that changed the picture. Similar to what happened with Rose too

We have nothing to play for in the league, so I haven’t been very surprised of our lackluster performances there of late. This one is important though, and we simply have to be up for it. Full throttle from the start, not like headless chickens, but resolute intensity and willingness across the board - no one fudging dare slacking off or daisying around (I’m looking at you, Madders). With the right attitude as a team, we can do this.

Like the first leg? Or the Liverpool semi second leg? We are just hustling with the whole rudderless shambles act?

Controversial opinion but in all honesty our 2019 Champions league run that season wasn’t that impressive performance wise either. Our league form was bad but the CL run glossed over that.

Only had 1 point after 3 group games, went to hell and back vs City and did f all in both Ajax legs until the second half of the second leg. Also decided not to show up to the final. We were pretty lucky that season and unfortunately we do not have that luck this season.

Hopefully we get a performance tonight otherwise May is just going to be outright torture especially if the scum end up getting to a CL final
We also had a lot of key injuries in that run, which is often forgotten. Kane, Dele, Wanyama Lamela and a demotivated, wantaway Eriksen. We didn't have the squad options to cover them, hence a lot of games with Winks and Sissoko in midfield and a 34 year old Llorente up front. Due to the constraints of the stadium build we had not signed anyone the summer before, we were still playing at Wembley until April. Yet with a relatively small squad we reached the League Cup SF losing on penalties; achieved 4th place in the League and reached the Champions League final. Yes we had some luck on the way but I think we earned that. To compare that season to this one and suggest the difference is down to luck is, with respect, wide of the mark.
