One thing nobody is talking about is the way in which Danso was wildly out of position in the build-up to the goal, and despite getting back, it left us behind the run of that attack. He did it again (took up a crazy position miles up the pitch).
Agreed, Danso sometimes came charging through midfield like Romero, wildly out of position and hoping others cover for him.
Gray also did it, so it must be by instruction, with Bentancur dropping in and hopefully someone else covering for Bentancur etc.
It looks pretty chaotic and definitely led to the loss; for their goal, Danso was still trying to get back and was yards behind play.

Bit harsh on Danso in my opinion, he gets back and is goal side of Savinho, tracks his man as Savinho puts on the breaks.
Then look at Halaands starting position, further from the goal than 6 of our players.
I'm afraid it's another classic case, for this team, of having the numbers BUT they are ball watching and have zero awareness where the danger is.
Destiny is the nearest and he doesn't get goal side to block but even he has someone free behind him (marmoush).

All our others are taking up a position while transfixed with the ball. A position that does fudge all to help.

Watch the video... only Bentancur (very briefly) swivels his head in the 10 secs before the goal.

It's like the fudging snake in jungle book!

Individual errors consistently

I don’t understand how/why some refuse to see the massive holes in this system, particularly on the defensive side.

As shown above he caught up
And then destiny somehow didn’t see the man in front of him

Destiny should definitely have done SOMETHING other than just watch Haaland.
But all the chaos comes about because Danso was up the left wing, I mean why the hell is he on the left wing?
Pause this video as soon as the images of the pitch appear, and look at where Danso starts chasing back. Seriously, he is playing left wing from centre back.

The chaos is caused because the back line is fractured, Bentancur does not drop in properly, and Danso is purely focused on getting back. When he finally gets back from his gut busting run he has 1 second to look around and think "OK, where is everyone" and he is drawn to Marmoush and he/Udogie let Haaland wander in.

With a proper, set back line you can think and defend much better than when chasing back into position. IF Danso is allowed to play left wing, then Bentancur has to drop in properly and someone else needs to cover for Bentancur.

We will never have a proper set up back line. Forget that idea, it's been 18 months it's clearly not part of the program.

When we attempt to build up from the back the Cb's start with the ball, the Fb's push up and narrow which means there is no easy pass out wide. So the Cb's hold onto it. Eventually there is some rotation with a midfielder dropping into the Fb position that the Fb have vacated. So we've swapped the position of 4 players for no gain at all. The Fb's are now in a #10ish position but contributing nothing to the build up cause we can't get the ball to them.

The wingers stay wide, but we don't play them in over the top/down the line early. We don't do anything early, players continually cut back in, then go backwards again to the Cb's.

Are my issues with the first phase of our build up play
Does Ange continue to do this cos he feels the team just need to be better at it?

Or does he think it will suddenly kick in and it will work against all teams we play?
It's laborious and easy to deal with.

Team and system wide tactical errors consistently.

This is how we are coached, it happens no matter who plays at CB. Unless you think the solution is to scrap all the CBs we have and replace them all with new ones.
That goal wasn’t because of the CB
It was the full back (udogie) not following in to making anyone else aware of the man in front
And Porro being poor with his winger

8 players including Vucario against 4
Not one seems to be want to communicate to anyone else
You can literally see a player look at the man and ignore them
Same way that Ipswich scores off bentacurs man
Same way we see Romero defend when he plays
Maybe it is the coaching but I find it odd that there is no one taking charge
Second half Danso took charge and didn’t fudge around
In that clip he was watching savinho who stopped running so he could see who he thought was his man

I should have said defenders tbf, dunno why I was focusing on the CBs when really I feel out defensive structure has a foundation of milk and cookies. It's soft and porous, with players often put of position, charging back to goal or just ball watching. We never really look organised or even compact, it's a shambles.

And some people still think that the f ucking up of the hamstrings of our CBs is bad luck.

We had a lot of players who could have stopped that attack
So the system allowed for the numbers needed (not something we always see)
But the lack of decisiveness needed was stark and scary
We are frequently seeing players ball watch and as I said before that was a Romero trait and he ain’t playing
But I don’t believe they are coached to watch the ball
So I don’t know what’s going on

Ange's defensive system of choice means that Udogie needs to stop, hold a line and play for a marginal offside. He is not likely to come around on the pivot in this system and go deeper than any of his team mates. We've seen this over and over this season. It obviously looks great when the flag goes up. When they get it wrong, it is another kettle of fish. As often the case, it is Gray's instincts that takes him deeper and plays them onside. You can see that Udogie is ensuring that Haaland is goal side of him and doing his bit.

I admire some of our defending using the rigid line approach, but it definitely needs more work. You have to be very confident just to let a man go and trust that your team mates will get him offside.

Dunno
But the system IMO doesn’t allow for players to watch the man in front of them and do nothing
That’s happening way too often this season even with the first choice playersv

Yeah, we've spoke about it lots. We absolutely don't appear to get tight enough.

I do think the players are being trained to make sure they are half a body's width further ahead of their marker. This is the primary thought over getting touch tight and marking. Hold the line, get the offside.

Maybe but this is on our 6 yard line a lot of the time
