So, today I got a call from my manager, where he said that due to the a merger with another company, that took place late last year, I was offered a package to leave the company!

fudging hell, I've been there for 13 years, and they have been bringing in more people constantly up until the Corona situation occurred!

I have 3 months leave, and have been offered up to 6 additional months pay.

Hard to handle on a Monday morning, and had it been at any other time, I'd be somewhat ok with it, but this was the worst fudging time! There are virtually no jobs atm, with 15% unemployed now. I seriously don't know what to do, because my specialisation is directly connected to my current job, and there aren't any other places where those skills are needed.

I'm broken at the moment.
 
Hey Kandi, that sucks, it's no consolation I know but I've been through something very similar, you will get out the other side.

Something that really helped me was seeing a personal development coach, she advised me on how to handle the offer and also get ready for the next thing, like you I'd been in the same company forever and had no idea how to go about getting another job.

fudging hell, that's rough. Seems like you're going to get a bit of time to look for a new job, at least. Surely there's someone else who'll need some of your skills in some capacity?
Best of luck, mate, I'm sure it'll work out eventually - it's always tough to swallow brick like that in the beginning!

Sorry to hear this buddy. It’s still very raw for you I’m sure but don’t let this defeat you. The timing is bricky but this could also be an opportunity for you. What do you do?

Will they give you full pay for six months? If so, perhaps you can spend that time up-skilling yourself or training in a new area within your profession/skill-set?

Currently I'm a Business Manager in a unit delivering Fraud prevention services (card/account transaction monitoring) for mostly banks in the Nordic and the UK. All I know is regarding fraud prevention. Not many options in that area.

Sorry to hear that news. It’s always a daunting thing to have to face. I had the same thing after 17 years 18 months ago. There is life after though.

Re the message I have quoted, forget the subject matter of your current job and first think instead about the skills you have.
You’re in a manager role. Do you manage staff? Or manage your own workflow/accounts? Do you have clients that you interact with? Analytical work? Attention to detail? Decision taking? Compiling reports for senior management? Anything you have done in the role to bring efficiency or more success/improved results?
Sometimes it’s hard to big up what you see as a standard part of your daily job. If you can’t do it for yourself, imagine you are listing the skills of a colleague in a similar role. I bet there are loads of things you do that are skills rather than just tasks. And most (soft) skills are transferable.

Will your company pay for any job seeking help? There are companies who offer CV help, interview techniques etc. All useful for building up your confidence to get back into the job market.
Do you have any good contacts through work? Are you on Linked In?

Give yourself a couple of weeks to get used to what is happening. Work out how you will stand financially so you know how much of a time-cushion you have. Reach out to any contacts you have to let them know you will be looking for work and if they hear of anything etc etc. Then start to think about if there are other things you would like to do, sign up on a couple of job advertising sites or with agencies (preferably recommended ones as some are rubbish).

Great post above from Glenda, I would just add LinkedIn is a good place to be, make sure your details are up to date and think about the key things you do they would figure in a recruiters search. If you pm me I can give you my profile to connect to, I work in regularly reporting and anything transaction based could be a transferable skill so maybe someone in my network can help.

My other piece of advice is don’t set any timescales on the next role or spend loads of time continually searching for roles - usually the next / right role will find you - try to use the time off to do things you can’t do when you are at work / enjoy doing.
 
Sorry to hear that mate, never good news let alone in this climate. I'd start with trying to neogtiate the package, 3 months notice plus 6 months pay which 30K is tax free depending on your earnings could be around 1 years salary. If 6 months is the opening offer then you might be able to negotiate that to 9 months and you'll also be entitled to payment for any holidays you've accrued to date this year.

For jobs it sounds like forsenic accounting in a way, I don't know much about it but wouldn't all the banks be wanting that type of skillset with more and more payments by card. When I was at the big 4 forsensics and cyber etc were big business and have probably only got bigger since.

Definitely negotiate! If you're in UK I can recommend an employment lawyer who won't charge you, he'll charge the employer... but I seem to recall you're in Norway

I'd thoroughly endorse this piece of advice. If you have the luxury of time take it and enjoy a break (although it's very easy to get used to it!)

Can only echo the above.

I've never once held a job related to what I read at university and rarely had two jobs where the technical knowledge was even in the same field. At the risk of sounding like Trump, good people are good people and every employer wants them. Many managerial roles don't require specific subject knowledge - that's what techies are there to advise on.

Also don't be afraid to look up the chain when searching for a new role. Whilst there might not be many jobs in your industry like yours, what about jobs like that of your boss or even his/her boss?

It sounds like you have some time to take to find this role. Consider adding a skill that makes your skill set rare and desirable. When I worked in IT, I took some basic accountancy courses. You'd be surprised how many software engineers design financial packages without having a clue how they're used. So see what complimentary skills are out there - you may end up with a new role where all of your previous experience is just a "nice to have" but it will make you far more employable than the next person.

Also take some time to assess what you really want/need. Whilst my job could never be described as a 9-5, nor can I just forget about it each evening, I don't end up wiped out for evenings, weekends and holidays like i was when I was younger. What's a comfortable salary for you and your family? Do you need all the stress that comes with more? What role gives you the most in terms of overall life?
 
Thx for all the encouraging messages! Yeah I've got some time. Will also call the union lawyers, so maybe I can squeeze out some more. I fudging ought to, as I just the other month secured a 35 million NOK deal, that was considered gone and dead months ago.

I'm thinking about going back to sound and light engineering again, as that was what I did as a self employed before I stared in this job. I'm terribly outdated in that department though. I'm old school anlog, and everything is digital there now.
 
AML - Anti Money Laundering - is big on the data side if you a bit techy.

Regardless, best of luck mate. Also as Scara said 30K is tax free which covers most salaries for a time.
