Zaha

It’s a lot easier for Townsend to have decent stats when two/three defenders are focused on Zaha every game. Or is someone going to tell me Palace fans would rather lose Zaha over Townsend...

One could argue that a player whose team is set up to give him the ball at every available opportunity is going to get more chance to impress - also if you're basing your opinion on MOTD/highlights (can't imagine many non supporters sit through Palace games in their entirity) that will play a part also as you generally only see attacking moves which result in goals/attempts at goal and moves which break down through poor passing/running in to blind alleys don't get any coverage.

That said the Townsend suggestion was me being a bit snide borne out of the constant requests for me to name who id prefer to Zaha - i know full well whoever i suggested would have had their stats pulled apart so i thought id get there first and show how they can be framed to suit your agenda. (Notice how i left out goals scored and completed take ons which have Zaha out in front)

If we can get a good value for Sissoko, similar to what we paid, off of Zaha so we end up parting with say 30m - i would probably accept that as a fair deal

I think we know that Poch wants the pace/power option. We tried on the cheap with players whose names begin with N' and we tried Sissoko, turns out he can't play football very well. Zaha is on another planet to that lot and if Poch thinks he's what we need, then I back the signing. To sign Premier League players costs a bomb now, nobody needs to sell on the cheap anymore. It's obscene, but that's how it is.

Fair comments mate. I’d be delighted with Zaha regardless of price as for once Poch would have got a primary target (I think that’s a fair assumption to make) and in some ways would be happy to see us overpay to prove we are capable of doing that when it’s for a player Poch really wants and not just shop for a bargain alternative as has been done all too often. I’d wager that if this deal does come off you’ll be a little disappointed, I’d be amazed if it was in the region of 30+ Sissoko tbh, even with Levy’s negotiating skills....

Think @the dza above is nearer mark !

I watch a fair bit of Palace.

That team only has one tactic - give the ball to Zaha. On that basis I don't think he'll be at all cheap - they're fudged without him.

I don't think he's nearly good enough for our first team, anyone we have in our front four are significantly more talented and consistent. But he's a huge upgrade on some of our squad players - he'd be 5th choice for one of the "behind Kane" positions.

Zaha obviously has ability and is at an age now when a step up in club and expectations makes sense for him.

I do think he is a bit 'wild west' though, and although some may say that makes him unpredictable, in a refined system and well oiled machine that doesn't always work well. Plus the leap from a 'wild west' type player to consistent performer always feels greater.

It remains to be seen if can unlock defences that are parking the bus as he's not exactly had much practice doing this while playing for Palace.

Plus I'm not always convinced that is the way to beat those teams. Possibly great technician s, quicker (and variety of) passing and movement (we do go a bit static some weeks) ala City is much harder to deal with and I'd say a more reliable and consistent tactic as not relying on an individual (although you could argue, Sane is akin to what we'd want from Zaha).

Poch probably likes his physicality (apart from when he's touched by another player :)) and let's face it you would feel some hope if he was coming on from the bench, he can do damage.
If Poch wants him, then I think he would be a good edition. But whether it's a success is a coin flip imo.

So hard to gauge what is a good price these days. We could get him for £60m and we’d all think “that’s toppy”, but then next window, or in a few days time, the likes of liverpool will go out and spend £100m on someone like James Maddison. They’re inflating the market so much window on window.
