What would YOUR priority signing be in the Jan transfer window?

They were trying to sell/loan Gittens during the last window, so hes no barrier to them bringing someone else in. Their wide players are ok, but they want better.

I don't find their approach that confusing, they continually player trade until they get an indisputable player ie. someone like Palmer. No settling at Chelsea.

What's "confusing" is they pay high fees, players fail and they somehow make money on the sale as well (with a couple of exceptions), nothing to see here ... move along

Cheatski just pulled out of the race for Semenyo. I think it’ll be important to remember when he chooses Liverpool, Arse or City, we didn’t miss out on him. He chose not to come to us. And that’s what needs addressing at the club. Making us a desirable destination

That requires high enough wages to compensate for the reduced sporting pedigree and ambition compared to the other Top 6 sides, hell the Top 8 even.

This is becoming a very dangerous window…spend too much on a specific type of player and we risk being locked in. Under-reinforce the manager and we risk looking unsupportive. Weird, weird times. I think another left-back and midfielder is important.

If we buy anyone we have a squad issue regardless
Ideal scenario is we can loan out Tel to Bournemouth for example to cover for Semenyo

We do unsupportive really well. With the lack of Levy wild card who knows what way we might play things but the latter option is usually our default approach.

However, when you think about it more the core of Ange's team has become the core of Frank's team. I think as long as you buy well these players can morph into the next manager's philosophy. I have a feeling the opposite applies as well. The ones that Frank will want to offload will be the same as the ones that Ange would have done if he had stayed on.

I'm actually a big fan of us staying in the 21-26 age bracket and going for players that we can get 5 years out of. We're well on way with that strategy with guys like Romero, VDV, Porro, Kulu etc. Kudus seems to fit that as well.

I agree with your 2 positions, but no LB really rolls off the tongue. I hope Lange can unearth one.

But you have the elephant in the room signing from Ange, Johnson, we don't need another super specific player that is unlikely to translate to another manager.

Hmm you know he's more of an AM than a CM though? He would add to the collection of AMs we already have in Simon's, Kulu and Maddison. I'm not sure that really a priority signing right now.
Id say he does a bit of everything. He can tackle, pass, shoot and he has a great workrate. You cant have enough quality players.

Would we then not end up with Gray, Bergvall, Sarr and Mainoo (and Bentancur) all best suited to playing 8, so some having to play in secondary positions of DM and 10? It kind of exacerbates our current imbalance.

Yes you can someone will always have to miss out &.then that can cause disharmony in the squad.

He is currently unhappy because he wants game time we can't guarantee him that. I am sure someone will pay utd ridiculous money & promise him first team football but it shouldn't be us

We need to make up our mind on what is happening with some of our younger players as well. I know they aren’t flash new signings, but there needs to be a plan for which of them we have high hopes for so that we can build around their potential inclusion in our squad building.

Scarlett for example, never seems to get a proper chance even though he looks decent (to me) when he’s got sub minutes, especially in Europe.

Devine, to me looked a real potential prospect for the squad but haven’t we tied an option to buy to his latest loan move? Do we think Donley at Stoke reaches his potential?

It feels like forever since a young player of ours got trusted and backed with a proper spot on the squad and given minutes.

It makes a difference on who we bring in for me. Currently I’d be going all out for players for the left hand side, both left back and a left attacker. However if we don’t think Scarlett will ever be ready for prem minutes, then with Solanke long term injured and Richys pit falls in terms of holding the ball up and general play, who helps us if he gets injured? Tel is an option, RKM is on loan…. I just want to know what the thinking is long term? It always feels like we collect players based on opportunism and then just wing it as we go.

What's interesting is that I just wrote about Tanguy on another thread, but in the context of the new Spurs. In 2014 to 2018 we had minimal net spending and Poch did amazing running on a shoestring whilst other bigger picture things were happening. Then we got a load of CL revenues and Levy decided in the summer of 2019 that he could loosed the purse strings. We were then left reeling as our 2 major signings didn't work out as planned, and it took years to offload them. The other one, Gio, I never felt was a bad signing anyway but I think most do. I think you get the point though that we spend big on a couple of players and couldn't recover.

Take that same scenario today with Johnson. It has nowhere near the same impact as we're in a completely different cashflow model now. We can ride out these storms really easily in a post stadium world. We just need to remember that we will always make some mistakes in the transfer market. I don't hear Arsenal bemoaning the £50m signing of Jesus on £265k a week when they're sitting pretty at the top of the league. He's missed over 50 games through injury. Johnson is fit and available and has scored 3 or 4 goals this season. He was our top scorer last season and I still think we'll recoup some decent money for him and move on at some stage.

My way of saying there's no elephant in the room with Johnson. It's just business as usual.
