The problem seems to be more lack of creativity with options, rather than decision-making. It would be nice to have someone with knowledge of a broader range of leagues than the current lot seem to have.
Pleat's specialism is English lower leagues. Sherwood covers English youth football. Rosenthal is the most internationally reputable: he sorted the Berbatov from BL deal for us and apparently 'discovered' Bosingwa, though he did once say: "Years ago I watched a young player and didn't think he would make it big. He was Kaka".
I disagree to an extent I think we have a good mix, of old school values brought to the table, maybe by people like Pleat and Rosenthal, to someone a bit younger but still English in Sherwood, through to AVB, Freund and then the back-room staff that have largely been recruited from Portugal.
We have gone after some interesting targets. We were in for Oscar, before Chelsea came calling. I think Holtby and Vertonghen were fairly creative solutions. I think Holtby infact is an absolute master-stroke as a very much VDV like player who was available very cheaply and who is in his early 20s.
I do think Levy is still looking for someone to complete the team. Weren't we trying to convince the Roma DOF to come? I think we may see a move to install a new DOF/technical director who will probably come from the continent.
I think one of the reasons why AVB got the job is supposed to be that he impressed Levy with this big scouting list he'd compiled during his year out the game. The fact that we've struggled to get some of the names on it is largely down to the expense in acquiring some of these players versus the increased 'unknown' quantity of young foreign players who have often been playing in leagues inferior to the Premiership.
From the links it even sounds like we looked at Ganso and Gaston Ramirez as potential play-makers, but probably decided that the money needed to buy these players versus the risk they represented just wasn't worthwhile doing. Ramirez has ended up doing well, but I wouldn't say he has been outstanding and what did Southampton pay for him, something like £13m? By contrast we got Holtby for, what, £1.5m? To me that's creative thinking in the transfer market and playing it like a pro! Even if Holtby ends up flopping we will sell him at a profit and move onto someone else.
Buying players in the Premiership makes sense as we know what they can do. Look at Dembele, he was a ready-made beast and he had a release clause that made the deal an attractive one financially. Why go foreign and all creative when you can sign someone that has been tearing it up in your own league for a reasonable sum?
