I know it's not the point of the article or this thread, but that stood out to me. Look at one "horrendous" performance as proof that we've suffered from injuries inconsistency?

I'm not too worried about them. For a start, I can imagine AVB being infinitely more impressive to foreign superstars than Rodgers. Plus Liverpool seemed to baulk at paying the knock down fee for a 29 year old Clint, where as we have shown much more adaptability in terms of assessing our potential deals. Plus we are higher in the league, we have a better team, we have a the world class training centre, we have a better chance of playing Champions League, and we have Levy. DL will absolutely revel in this deal making process come deadline day. I can imagine Liverpool even trying to muscle in, but Levy holding tight, making Sneijder say to Inter that they either sanction the Spurs move or he stays on their wage bill at takes 200 grand a week for doing nothing. I'll back Levy all day long over the amateurs at Liverpool. Plus, Liverpool have been trying to get the wage bill down themselves and don't want to sign players on big wages with little resale value. Therefore if they did go for Wes, I can't imagine they will offer that much more than us if at all, and I think with all the other factors in our favour I reckon we should be able to seal this deal.
 
All this people saying its vintage Levy by all accounts we aren't even in for him, its just his agent hawking him out to anyone and everyone.
 
Moutinho would cost us around £20m-£24m and I'd say near the top band of our wages around 80k a week. Say we sign him for 4 years thats around £38m-£40m for him over the full peroid of his time with us.

Sneijder would cost us very little in the way of a transfer fee, I would say in the low millions. Maybe £5m-£8m ? and pay him say £150k a week. That works out around £36m-£38m


Sneijder is the better player, but Moutinho would have a sell on value. It's a hard one for me.

I'm not sure that Sneijder's wages would be anything like £150K per week.

Regardless of what he's now on at Inter, it's clear that there isn't a future for him there now. It's also clear that no other club will match or even come close to his wages at Inter - unless a Russian oligarch steps in with a huge wage offer at the last moment.

I think he'll prefer to get his career back on track rather than rot in the reserves at Inter or move to Russia for the money. And I'm quite sure that he'd rather come to the Premier League than sign for Galatasaray. And given that he's not in a strong bargaining position, I suspect that he'd be very happy to come to a club like Spurs for £90-100K per week.

Wouldn't exactly make him poor. And he'd be at an exciting, high profile club in the most high profile league in the world - not to mention living in one of the greatest cities in the world. He'd be sure to get a glowing recommendation for the move from Rafa.
 
The talk linking him with Liverpool just doesn't seem to go away.
Don't under-estimate the attraction of Liverpool to European footballers.
Yep, they are now where we were 5/6 years ago - we've almost done a complete swap with them in that time, but they are still (rightly or wrongly) considered a massive club by many players.

For me, this window will be like so many before it. We all know exactly what we need to move from a team in a real battle for 4th to being favourites for 3rd - but the Club/Levy just don't seem willing or able to take that extra step. I genuinely believe that if we signed Mouthinho and a decent striker we'd be favourites to finish 3rd (as I think Chelsea might slide a bit now they've had the initial and limited bounce of a new manager arriving). But I can see us possibly brining in Holtby early and maybe a random, 11th hour random striker signing, and then us finishing 5th/6th.

I accept all the arguments about January being a difficult time to buy etc, etc, but it is only a problem if you've failed to strengthen adequately the previous summer. We made some great signings in the summer - Dembele, Lloris and Vertonghen, but IMO those are players we needed BEFORE we sold VdV and Modric.
We've got a good solid squad but we're missing those final magical pieces of the jigsaw. For me the next two weeks are crucial to where we are going as a club for the next few years. It's players like Moutinho and Sneijder who will take us to the next level. Think of the money we could free up from the weekly wage bill if we sold/released Rose, Jenas, Bentley and Gomes - the best part of £170k per week I would have thought. And bear in mind we have the money to sign Mouhtino because we all but did it on deadline day but ballsed up on the timing.

I don't think we're remotely interested in Sneijder other than a loan deal with heavily subsidised wages. To buy he's too expensive as it is without factoring in his fitness and form. He hasn't played well for almost 3 years, there is a reason only Galatasary have a deal acceptable to Inter and the player on the table.

Liverpool probably are interested in him and I could definitely see him going there but it would be a massive risk for them which could easily go the way of Joe Cole.

I think that is a good call. A subsided loan deal to either us or 'Pool puts Sneijder in the shop window for a summer transfer.
But in these tough times I can't see who buys him.

In other words "there's no chance he's staying, ill tell everyone he's closer to joining galatasaray so another club actually makes an offer."
