Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

A couple (including Gary O'Neill when he was at Wolves) have said that they knew exactly how we were going to play. Not a criticism per se, but not a ringing endorsement either.
Everyone and every team knows how each other is going to play. Do you not know how the Goons, Emirates Marketing Project etc are going to play? They would know how teams they have lost to were going to play. It's a meaningless statement that is just a nice little sound bite for anyone who buys it....

You have the give the club some credit here. Levy's been characterised as a chairman with an itchy finger who'll sack managers to deflect from his own shortcomings. He's staying the course here - whatever happens, Ange will not be able to say he wasn't given a fair crack of the whip in terms of time.
That's because that is exactly what has happened previously.

I am pleased that perhaps he has finally learned a lesson though.

Fair point on Deki. And you could throw Sonny in too a couple of times.

I'm not advocating that we become Wimbledon or anything. I'm from Ireland and while I love Jack Charlton and what he did for us, his brand of football was an eyesore (and of its time in fairness). But there are situations where getting it out of the danger area is the right thing to do even if you are very likely to lose possession. I can think of several times last night where we dingdonged about with it and it was the wrong thing to do.
I didn’t mention Sonny because I’m fed up of flagging up how poor he is now
We did mess around with it but their gaols didn’t come form that
I don’t remember them even have a shot from it
Their goals came from a corner that wasn’t to an OG
And some messy play from Bissouma and some poor defending from Drago and a bounce over the keeper when he should have done better
Very very low quality chances

And there is an 80% to 90% chance that’ll happen especially if everything bounces off your centre forward like it did Solanke last night.

But by getting it up the pitch you get time to reset and get into shape and get a bit of a breather. dingdonging about with it in your own box or around it runs the risk of our lads being out of position (particularly the full backs) and losing the ball close to our goal.

And who knows, with a long ball, you might just turn them or get a set piece.

Neither approach is right every time. This is about making good decisions at the right time. We didn’t several times last night.
Neither goal conceded last night came with us dingdonging about with it in our own box or around it. When we're passing it around near our own box our fullbacks are anything but out of position.

Last night we played a mixture of long balls and short passes. In fact I would say we played more long balls in last night's game than we have in any game this season. Just about every long ball we played resulted in Arsenal getting possession back more quickly than when we played short balls.

Generally agree with your post, but interested as to what else he could've done in the last two months given what we don't have?

It's a good question mate, maybe reigning in the FBs a bit sooner than he has done? I could say earlier integration of Spence but he has been out with the odd niggly injury here and there. The counter point question is whether Ange has got absolutely everything he could have gotten out of the team during not just this stage but the past 12 months or so of fairly wretched form.

Arguably the damage was done by only making one signing that improved the first XI in the summer. But then even to that, Odobert could have been right up there adding in something different with his skillset. I can understand wanting to sign the types of players we couldn't sign in a couple of years once they've flourished a la Gray (if it's grey i am sorry Bullet) / Bergvall. But we've spent enough that an injury to Richarlison + Wilson shouldn't suddenly mean we need Moore / Lankshear to step up when they've barely got a goal or assist to their name in men's football.

The less said about the epicenter of incidents and accidents in our dynamic and predictably unpredictable senior midfield duo the better.

Plus our talismanic "best" player looking absolutely dreadful and us extending his contract doesn't look great. That one is a tricky situation, easy in hindsight but perhaps he should have left when Kane did to really start a new era (this is miles off what you asked me so apologies for the tangent!)

Your ideal defensive position is having your back 4 together in a line.

When you play out, your full backs will advance and try to create angles for passes for the keeper, centre backs and central midfielders. Ours will often invert higher up the pitch. They are often out of the ideal defensive position when we try to play out because they have to be to do it effectively.

The one where we play out and Kinsky passes to Spence. Spence takes that centrally on the edge of our box. That’s not his position.

did you see the way arsenal reset defensively every time we had the ball in our box, the way they dropped back just in case we tried to play long?

no?

me neither

A pretty fair appraisal mate. I mean, there's something in there for all of us to agree with. It's such a weird and messy time. If I don't apply contecxt to this moment, I am looking at us in the lower third of the table 2 points below West Ham. That is not good. Is contet my friend or enemy? I genuinely am not sure.

It obviously doesn't mean much, but it's odd looking at the table, as we've got better goal difference than Forest sat in third place - we've got the fifth best goal difference in the league. Consistency, where art thou? That holy grail, how near, how far.

It’s the fine margins
But that is was has to change

the 9 goals against City in crisis and Southampton being Southampton skews it

Quite simply we have a junior defense (who are playing well but in an elite league), coupled with a substandard midfield.

Without Bentancur purring we are limited to playing down the flanks. Bissouma has the ability to run games, but he doesn't know when and how to. It either clicks for him in a game or it doesn't. And when he tried to cut back and play through the middle last night he cost us dear.

So for me a midfielder and an attacker must be top of Ange's list. Touch wood we get some quality back with Romero. To play this system we need CBs who are fearless and can dissect teams. He is a huge miss for us, as we become much more one dimensional. Especially with midfielders in front of the defenders who are also not established. Sarr is still settling, great as a squad player. But we really lack in midfield.

We also need another CB but that can wait. If we somehow pull a midfielder and attacker out the hat this Jan as well as get Romero back, we'd be back imo. Ready to win a cup.

There is a variety in what other teams do that we don’t have (although there has been the odd sign of it of late). Other teams tend to take some account of what their opponents do, and adapt their own play as a result; under Ange we generally don’t.

I haven’t heard any managers or players say it about other teams in the league this season. Strange that.
