It's still about money. The EPL does better than the other foreign leagues to attract the best talents here through financial might. Brexit terms not agreed yet but might just change the relative attractiveness between football leagues in a big way

It's not all about money though. That's one factor. City, Chelsea, Manu in particular have spent boatloads of it without getting to the level of Europe's best for years.

I wish it wasn't the case, but for me it seems like Guardiola and Klopp have changed that. Only the future will tell what the future brings, but for me they're at a level now seen extremely rarely in the PL, despite a ton of money being available for a long time.

There was at one time a pretty valid idea that the Pl was behind the continent technically and tactically, and this was regularly shown up in Europe - pretty much as soon as they came across a decent team.

That was a very long time ago now though.

You only need to look at the domestic league over the last decade to see the advancements made technically and tactically. Its gone forward over the 10 years, and was 10 years ago light years ahead of the decade before.

Emirates Marketing Project have gone out of the CL the last 3 (or 2?) years to domestic opposition, not foreign. And EPLs clubs record of wins/finals/semis over this period really does bear out that the gap (if there is one) is much much smaller than it ever was.

To the degree where when the old "not as good tactically/get knocked out against first decent team" cliche gets rolled out it is quite frankly wrong, and nowhere near accurate.
 
Given the game we have coming up I am hesitant to indulge too heavily in schadenfreude but I would like to get my thoughts down on Liverpool

I am delighted they didnt win it, absolutely made up. fudging love it.

They have done remarkably well this season, especially considering I still dont think they play particularly good football.

Yes, I know, thats blasphemous to many on here, but I just dont think they are that good in all honesty.

Far closer to Leicester when they won the league than City, lets put it that way.

Im no particular fan of City or Guardiola (bellend, and whats with that fudging cardigan?!) but I have to say they play some excellent football. It borders on total football at times and can be joyous to watch.

Liverpools is a far more basic and fundamental game, and Im actually stunned it has worked as well as it has.

I think they have had more than their share of good fortune, jammy goals, undeserved penalties... I think they have had players hitting peaks they probably never will again. I think everything came together for them, with a real fair wind behind and clear road ahead (again just like Leicester) and if ever they were going to win the league it would have been with that kind of momentum and fortune.

And they didnt, and yes I do enjoy that, but the point is this:

I dont think its reasonable at all to expect anything like that performance again next season. I just dont, and Im baffled by the narrative following Liverpool this season, up to the end of this season, and now already going onto next season. Genuinely baffled.

This isnt a team growing into a philosophy, evolving a complex system of play, developing... at all.

They are what they are.

And the chances of all the dominoes falling the same for them have to be astronomical.

They are limited, not as much as Leicester where but similar.
But the media big them up, first goal today, cross from the Fb was described as perfect, a great ball right into mane path. It came off the defenders arse ffs.
The CL Final is critical for them now, should they lose that I think they will implode.
I expect epic levels of brick from them on the day.

Fed up hearing about how they only lost one game, how many they not win 6-7. That probably 3 poor teams they couldn't beat.

Given our stake in it I hesitate to talk about the CL too much, but I agree.

I said a week or so ago, they have put everything into this PL campaign, and they have all (board down to fans) bought the narrative that has been fed all season.

And as I say, everything came together for them in that once in a lifetime way, they all believed it - and then they didnt get it.

Apparently 97 points would have won the league in all other seasons but one. Thats incredible!

And to be on the wrong side of it will be absolutely gutting.

I think right now they will just be rolling all those feelings into the CL, in a desperate "well if we win this itll all be ok" kind of bid, so if they dont?

I think it will tear them apart. That sort of disappointment would take a hell of a long time to recover from, itll be a scar they carry for a long time.

And thats the difference. For us? If we win itll be incredible, but if we lose - while we will of course be gutted, we'll bounce back. It wont be a negative experience because we know the achievement of getting there, and we havent spent a full season building up the pressure on winning.

I genuinely think this man is an idiot. Not in the "I dont like him" way, but in the literal - I think he is actually really stupid, and I wonder if he ties his own shoe laces way.

As to his views here? Needless to say I disagree.

I think this season was peak Liverpool and it would take a miracle to repeat it.

I dont think theirs is a sustainable way of playing, unlike City, and I think itll show.

I fully expect them to be a strong team in the top 4 (or pushing it), but I dont think they are set for 97 points again.

They are a rocky start to the season away from a nightmare IMO.

Twunty seems to forget how far behind city they were last season, but of course no one can repeat that, only a club like Liverpool can achieve such heights (lets not mention the lows).

I was talking to the wife about this, she was confused why there was so much hype around Liverpool even after they didnt win the league.

I made the point then - they havent won the league in near 30 years, and spent most of the last decade behind us (and its not like we have been running for the title).

It really makes no sense at all.
 
Boo hoo the media tell me it's such a shame Liverpool didn't win league, they only lost 1 game (sob), they got record number of points for a runner up (wipes away tear), how about the 10 point lead on City? I know of an other team who would be labelled "bottlers" in such circumstances. Looking forward to the 3 weeks of articles and programmes telling me of how much the whole country is behind them and hoping they win the CL because they deserve something from this season and their players telling us of "their journey", "tragedies in their families" and close relationship with "their GHod", the full BGT/Xfactor routine.
