Transfer Rumour Thread

Wriggly i presume you had forgot when we signed VDV? we signed him after securing CL football so it wasn't the best example to use. Berbatov would have been a better example.

I forgot we got him on deadline day. I did use Berbatov, see previous post.

Thats fair enough too, but then I just wouldnt buy. Keep the funds untill that player stronger than what we have becomes available.

There is room for interim improvements.

Yes, in an ideal world we would snap our fingers and sign someone better than Lennon. Then Lennon would become excellent cover.

Not likely to happen.

So your choice is simply to not do anything?

Id prefer, while waiting for that ultimate player, to get someone into the squad as near to as good as Lennon as posisble, so that the squad is improved.

In turn so are our chances of playing consistently at the same level in the same style

In regards to buying, yes.

I would change the way we play. I would have 3 with Modric, Sandro and Parker in there and 2 up top with Ade, Bale and VDV as an example.

Your guessing, just like your previous posts about not being able to sign anyone without CL football (there's more Modric, Berbatov, Parker) and not being able to sign anyone till summer 2013, its all guessing unfounded crap. I'm surprised your getting a response from me.

Yes, of course I am guessing, but I find it hard to believe that many would disagree that signing a player who will immediately better than Aaron Lennon will be far less likely if we aren't in the CL.

You are guessing that Lennon won't get injured (or his injury somehow won't affect us) and we will find a currently hidden gem like Modric or Berbatov in the specific position of right wing, even if we have the factor of not being in the CL against us, which will have unknown effects on our current best players and may end up with them leaving.

We are all guessing, we can only guess, I just think it is utterly foolish to waste this summer when we desperately need to strengthen the SQUAD in order to continue to compete, and be able to keep our players on wages they deserve.

Exactly.

Its quite macaronic to expect a club to only sign players better than what they have. How about competition for places and squad cover?

Doubt someone of Lennon's caliber will sit on the bench forever too....so when his contract runs out and he's snapped up by a top 4 rival, what do we do?

Sign someone better than the guy we replaced Lennon with? And relegate that guy to the bench?

Cloud Cuckoo Land springs to mind.

Rather change the entire system of play than add to the squad to support a consistent formation?

Fundamentally disagree with that one.

You're talking about squad improvements? To me that is what Nelsen and Saha were for example. And I'm glad we made those purchases. But, like with those two, if we make them it's important that they are cheap so that we have money available when that special player becomes available.

One of the reasons I want us to go for Hoilett, he might not turn out to be good enough to be first choice for a top 4 team (although he still might become good enough), but he will give us great cover and not cost much. We shouldn't spend a bunch of money on "squad players", we're not City. I think Harry has done very well in this regard.

I also think that we can buy players as "squad players", or at least accepting that they won't be starters when we have a fully fit starting 11.

At the end of the day were Bale, Kaboul, Lennon, Walker, Ekotto... brought in as first teamers?

A squad player need not be super cheap, need not be old, just needs to fit.

Over the course of a season does a player stay at the same level or status the whole way through? Of course not, form and fitness brings players to the fore or away from the first team...

If a player comes into the squad, improves it and contributes Im happy

Just seen on SSN that apparently we are in talks with Swansea over the extension of Caulker's loan into next season. Thoughts?

I'd expected Caulker to come back and immediately be in contention for the first team for the first game next season.

I never mentioned anything about Valencia on the left flank

Dude you have got that wrong 100%, before his injury he was first choice on the right wing two seasons ago when he injured - at that time Nani was playing on the left. It was when Valencia got injured that he (Nani) spent more time on the right. Remember Valencia has had a number of injuries.

The bottom line though is that be it nani or Valencia Man Utd have a high quality player on the right and I would contest that one is backup for the other.

Now lets cut to the chase, Spurs play a formation whereby our wingers are paramount, that being the case we need options in those positions, especially in the case of Lennon who picks up an alarming number of niggling injuries. We cannot afford to be a club that continues to suffer once Lennon gets injured. I do not mind if we sign a top quality right winger or a player with obvious potential but we need to do one or the other.

My concern was that we play our best football with two natural wingers and that was one thing he was not. He could not do a Sandro/Parker job either. I only remember him playing well against Milan, but that was a game when all our players excelled.

I hate it when managers buy a player because they think he is good but have no idea as to how he will fit in the team jigsaw

i see it now, you said the best 'left right' winger in thr country. not sure what you meant by it but i made an assumption on you meaning left and sort of half glazed over the bit where you said right as well

if the situation played out how you said then i stand corrected. i was of the opinion that valencia was a squad guy for quite some time..at least 2 or 3 seasons but possibly its been the case in my eyes for just 2 seasons or a season and a bit? but you're convinced that it was not the case...certainly more convinced than i am about the alternative so i'l take your word for it. but no one is going to tell me that valencia is ahead of nani in the pecking order...MAYBE ahead of young? but i dont think so personally.

If he does stay at Swansea next season, I hope to GHod we have another CB lined up in Summer. King and Gallas will be another year older and I assume Nelsen will be released in June/July

yeah I can't see letting Caulker go to swans i'd rather have Caulker Kaboul Dawson King and Vertonghen. Let Nelsen and Gallas go they both look as though the tank is nearly empty.

add to that a marquee signing, adebayor, and a striker and i would call it a good year

this thing about only buying first team players is quite rare in football. normally you by players that can compete for places and push other but also those that understand their heirachy in the selection process. to be perfectly honest, the idea of refusing to buy players unless they improve your first team can hurt you in several ways

No cover for injuries to first teamers if you cant get that player that is better than your first teamer under budget
Not enough scope for squad rotation and maintain an acceptable level of performance through the season
You'd be limited to only one or two competitions where you can envisage optimal performances as much as you can
It can leave your team stagnated in progress at which point you wont be able to even attract these 'first team' players anyway
No competition for first teamers could means their spot is nearly guaranteed, no impetus to fight harder when playing

there is a reason why the idea of buying players only for your first team is done by the clubs with an obscene amount of money paying inexcusable wages......and FM gamers tbf, it isnt realistic (especially when you have a very good team playing for a PLC), it isnt practical and its potentially financially crippling

also the idea that first teamers will be happy to move to the bench, that it wont screw with morale in a sense is a bit off key. its almost like you buy the better player and then the previous first teamer is happy to sit on pine wood. he wont be, he will leave...and then the drop in quality from first teamer is even larger

of course we should look at bettering our first 11 team but not at the expense of a strong , long season enduring squad IMO.

another thing is that quite a few of the players starting for us now.......were actually initially bought , or rather seen ,as squad players / players that were not significantly upgrading our first team. which is actually quite funny

Nani and Valencia offer very different things. To me it seems that Nani is preferred against park the bus teams where United need flair to break them down while Valencia is often picked against better teams as he's much better defensively and works harder from what I have seen. I don't think either one of them is first choice or a backup player, but both will get loads of games and of course Nani can play on the left as well.

Long term I think this is a good thing. Another year of consistent first team football at a team like Swansea will help him develop better than being a squad player for us in my opinion. And although I rate Caulker very highly for the future, is he ready to be a starting centre back for us against top PL teams and in crucial CL matches if we do get CL football. I'm not sure.

I agree and i hope that man is Verthongen.

Harry has already talked about giving Nelsen another year. Kaboul/King will be first choice. Dawson backup. Gallas and Bassong are the ones that might leave.

William Gallas, if he stays fit through the end of the season, will be the difference between 3rd and 4th for me, plus very possibly a trophy...

People seem to be missing the point it's not about buying 'first teamers' or 'squad players'. It's about bringing together a squad.

The very problem we have is that we have players that know they are tagged as 'squad' players, won't get in the team unless someone gets injured and aren't happy about it. See Corluka, Krancjar, Pav, Defoe, Bassong.

I concede that the 'first teamers' are better, but you need to keep the squad players hungry and give them a chance to stake their place in the team and keep them in the team if they do well.

This is where I feel Redknapp has failed this year, he's not rotated at the right times to keep the squad fresh and not wanting to leave.

It's hard to be too critical mind, given our current position. Just my opinion. Fergie is a master at this.
