Transfer Rumour Thread

No african that is not the case. have thought this for several years which is why I have never been drawn into the conversation of buying players for backup unless that are young with bags of potential. The problem with the average backup player is that is what they are, backup, and not as good as what you have, not even close to.

Now I appreciate that if a player is so good, like Bale that it is nearly impossible to sign for us and walk in and take Bale's place in the starting lineup, that is because he is a very special player. But I would have hoped we would be interested in signing players that would give the likes of Lennon and Ade a run for their money so that when these players are not available there is not such a major drop off.

I see you have forgotten so soon two seasons prior to a very bad injury in a CL match when Valencia was playing on the right and Nani on the left that the former looked not only the superior winger but the best left right winger in the country. He then suffered a very bad injury and had a very long time out of the game. I can assure you his current run of formis not the first time he has excelled for Man Utd.

I rate Hoilet highly, a young player with bags of potential and would love him at Spurs. My problem is that when people use the term backup I think of players like Steven Pienaar, a player I did not really rate and came here to a squadd filling job without ever excelling at any one position

As for sessagnon I have nothing against him, but I want us to buy players in positions we need not just to take up spaces in our squad. Can you enlighten me as to what position he acutally plays, all I know is that he is an attacking players of sorts with a decent goal return? Not sure if he is a winger? If so which wing? Could h eplay with VDV or instead of VDV? you know me I have a weakness for 2 strikers anyway

valencia has never played consistently on the left wing though, nani played there i thought. and two seasons ago? you're right i cant quite remember who the personell was but ever since ronaldo left, nanin has slotted in seamlessly and IMO was widely considered to be united's main wing threat,. but i could be wrong about the general perception by a majority of football fans out there.

also i dont think that this is the first time he has excelled, he has been very good for united for quite a while, but as a squad player as opposed to a guaranteed first team starter that has not shift in regard, at least not a significant shift, when compared with nani.

if you saw valencia several years ago as similar / near enough as good as nani with as little exposure and marketing he (valencia) has? then nice one, i made a bad assumption there tbh. but i'll say this though.....quite a lot of people would put nani as the starter and valencia as the squad player

sessengnon plays RM, RWF, SS ..i think .

pienaar is wierd though, he really was on bad form but is as good a back up plaer as you can find anywhere. but he was consistently playing average for us and didnt propel our starting lineup significantly

Sometimes I think looking for a backup is our problem. Valencia or Nani who is the backup? While I actually rate Hoilet and would not mind if we sign him I feel we should not always be going for backups but rather a player that would give our first team players a fight for their place. Nani was excellent last season on the right while Valencia has been just as good this season. We need a similar strength in depth next season.

Which is why if we do keep Ade we still need a player at least as good, but hopefully better

Hopefully whomever the next wide player we sign is more of a success than Pienaar, Bentley, dos Santos...

Would love if we had 3 top notch players competing for those 2 spots in the team like ManU have rather than having to completely re-jig the team every time Bale or Lennon miss a match.

Me too, then we could get in Hoilett, Siguardsson get rid of Harry and bring in Rogers and teams would fudging brick themselves playing us.

COYFS.

In all honesty, we'd be getting a like-for-like replacement for Lennon in Hoillett. A very good player in Sigurdsson who would probably do fudging wonders in our team considering how good he is doing at Swansea and well a talented player who can cause enough problems for players in Sessegnon.

Don't see a problem with Pienaar out, Hoillett in.. Kranjcar out, Sigurdsson in and Saha out, Sessesgnon in to be honest with you. ;)

Isn't that allegedly part of the reason Mooney wanted out? i.e. perceived lack of ambition in the transfer market

How would Bale / Modric feel if our summer signings are Sessegnon and Siguardsson?

We need to improve the starting 11 first, which would in turn automatically provide cover from the current 11 which would then become squad players

I dont want to buy backups, I want to buy first 11 players with the current first 11 player(s) dropping out to make way if you know what I mean.

Unless its just me, you dont buy a weaker player to play backup to your strongest first 11 player. You improve on that and its that first teamer that sits on the bench.

Ade on a permanent deal/new striker first, please. Cover for Lennon second. Then we can worry about Sigurdsson or Sessegnon, good players though they may be. And personally, I was of the impression that Sessegnon was just a slightly better version of Dembele?

Fair enough. I don't think we'll be getting anyone stronger than Bale in or Lennon for that matter, so the signing of Hoillett or even Sessegnon if we play the system we sort of do now would be justified. We'd be adding depth to positions we literally don't have good enough depth for.

Sessegnon knows where the back of the net is.

Thats fair enough too, but then I just wouldnt buy. Keep the funds untill that player stronger than what we have becomes available.

I never mentioned anything about Valencia on the left flank

Dude you have got that wrong 100%, before his injury he was first choice on the right wing two seasons ago when he injured - at that time Nani was playing on the left. It was when Valencia got injured that he (Nani) spent more time on the right. Remember Valencia has had a number of injuries.

The bottom line though is that be it nani or Valencia Man Utd have a high quality player on the right and I would contest that one is backup for the other.

Now lets cut to the chase, Spurs play a formation whereby our wingers are paramount, that being the case we need options in those positions, especially in the case of Lennon who picks up an alarming number of niggling injuries. We cannot afford to be a club that continues to suffer once Lennon gets injured. I do not mind if we sign a top quality right winger or a player with obvious potential but we need to do one or the other.

My concern was that we play our best football with two natural wingers and that was one thing he was not. He could not do a Sandro/Parker job either. I only remember him playing well against Milan, but that was a game when all our players excelled.

I hate it when managers buy a player because they think he is good but have no idea as to how he will fit in the team jigsaw

So I assume you mean we would wait until the summer of 2013, because no-one better than Lennon would ever be available to us in January - we don't have the money or the reputation. This means we have to come top 4 next season in order to secure this talent who would either be unknown to us or unavailable this summer, with no guarantees they would want to come even if we were to finish in the top 4, which is likely to be incredibly difficult next year if we lose Lennon to a long-term injury.

We simply have to get some back-up to Lennon this summer. Preferably young and talented but any good winger/wide forward will do.

I do. While I rate Hoilett highly none of the players are a central striker capable of leading the line. The moment next season Ade or his replacement gets injured we will have a problem. Neither VDV or Defoe are effect leaders of the line

Did we get Ade or VDV with CL football ?

Agree with everything you've said apart from this.

Firstly, I think Pienaar could have been a very decent player for us on the left, but also, part of the reason we so badly need cover for Lennon is because we don't play our best football with 2 wingers. Lennon on the right to stretch the play with someone coming in off the left side has always been very succesful for us (see Modric and Malbranque), and I think that Bale is devastating when he has the space to either come inside or attack the flank, he has been denied that space recently but having a player hugging the opposite touchline gives him that bit more time to pull things off in the middle.

The only reasons for these 'wonky' systems failing/ being abandoned in the past were personnel related - Jenas and Zokora being brick, Modric being better in the middle, the emergence of Bale, our purchase of VDV, etc.

If we make CL I will be interested in seeing how the Eden Hazard saga pans out although I will not be holding my breath

We got Adebayor on loan. CL gives us both the profile and the money to get a player of his calibre on a permenant deal with decent wages. There was pretty much no other good strikers who wanted to come to Spurs last summer, we can't forget how much of an impact being in the CL makes.

VDV would never have agreed to sign for us if we weren't in the CL imo, plus we had already qualified after beating Young Boys 4-0 a week earlier iirc.

Your guessing, just like your previous posts about not being able to sign anyone without CL football (there's more Modric, Berbatov, Parker) and not being able to sign anyone till summer 2013, its all guessing unfounded crap. I'm surprised your getting a response from me.

Wriggly i presume you had forgot when we signed VDV? we signed him after securing CL football so it wasn't the best example to use. Berbatov would have been a better example.
