Tim Sherwood Testimonial OMT Spurs v Aston Villa 11th April

I doubt the Arse will be in for him, the way they are going they will be in for a bigger name. He would be perfect for us though( imo).
I like him too. He does't seem to be everybody's cup of tea but to me he looks like he has a bit of everything. Could easily step up to another level with a better team around him.

Would agree, he is only 24 and had scored 39 goals in 84 Prem games for a crap Villa side. He is great in the air has some pace and is strong as a ox. He has been out with a bad injury but is now scoring goals again.

A Tottenham side with Benteke and Kane up front would be frightening physically. Bit have the ability to do things on their but also bring their team mates into games and clearly both have an eye for goal

Their are plenty on here who think we need more technical forwards and that's fine if we can find one but benteke is certainly a good option

Count me in too. Really don't get why some don't rate him. He's been a beast for one of the worst sides in the league, we only have 3 players in the entire squad who score semi regularly, and people think we don't need him.

it can work if Poch loosens up a bit with his formation...i mean, instead of 4231, we should go with 4312, with Eriksen in behind Kane and Benteke, and we would have 3 centre midfielders protecting the back 4 when defending, and when attacking one or two of them can get forward and join the attack

with the 4231 formation the width is provided by the full backs, it will stay the same with the 4312

It may suit us better depending on who we sign and bring up from the youth

It also means we have less dependants on the width form the attacking 3 which rarely works for us

Also have the option of the diamond midfeld

He's Belgian too!! woop! :)

Yeah, would be a good signing I reckon too (and I'm not on a 1 week bandwagon). Wonder how his previous injury will pan out.

this pic shows that with the ball towards fazio, benteke is able to attack from behind him.
if fazio went for it and missed there was another villa player behind him.

this is how to beat poch's defence set up - early cross to two attackers on far post CB

To be fair Dier there is marking no one and normally you wouldn't get two attacking players so close together in the box

A 4-3-2-2 wormation would essentially be a diamond thing? Not sure many teams are succeeding with those over time...

Wouldn't even have to change formations if we buy Benteke or someone like him. Kane has shown himself perfectly capable of playing the number 10 role, and when attacking could get plenty of freedom to push up to support Benteke. Might even interchange a bit. With rotation, injures, EL etc we would have plenty of games to give both players as a striker if that somehow is a problem. Both would be tremendous options off the bench should we leave one of them out and we might not have to work our players into the ground.

Not saying Benteke necessarily (I know he divides opinions), but someone big and strong to replace Adebayor could be a perfect addition to our squad imo.

Agreed, thought so at the time too. Dier is marking space and Fazio has two to deal with. And when the crosser gets time and space to pick a ball for Benteke to make a running jump at like that most defenders will struggle to contain him. Don't think we defended it all that badly, was a good piece of play from Villa.

You could have the best defenders in the world and with the formation we play this is likely to happen 2/3 times a game, our fullbacks are so far up the pitch that teams just play in long diagonal balls over the top and our CB`s have too much area to cover, this has been happening to us all season no matter who we play from Burnley to Chelsea, the more possession we have the more likely it will be that our fullbacks are further forward to provide width, when we lose possession in the centre of the pitch ( which we are very good at doing ) they are straight in on our CB`s with the fullbacks too far up field to cover, I am not sure that having better players would prevent this, what do you think ?

Sherwood's fooled you as well ;)

there's always going to be one CB closer to the near post and once the attack comes down that wing he has not much time to assess the situation behind him. dier's position is correct - guarding the near post - watching the cross and protecting that area.

but what's happened here is the target is the double teaming the CB nearer the far post. jimmy-g is right in that here you either need the fullback or the centre-mid to help cover the blind spots.

playing the high line has its risks and you can't and cut out all the crosses, especially the early ones. but that's when we are at our most vulnerable with the CBs isolated.

Like I said, I don't think we defended it all that badly, it was a good move by Villa. A couple of small-ish mistakes from us. Including, I think, that Dier's positioning isn't optimal. He's not marking anyone and will only be able to cut out a mibrick cross at this point. If he's a bit more central he can still attack a lower cross, whilst also being in a position to challenge a Villa player if the cross is better aimed (as it was).

Not a huge mistake though, like you say it's happening quickly. I think we could have done more to stop the cross coming in. With a midfielder covering we have 3 against 2 on the flank and Eriksen/Rose can afford to get closer. Surely stopping crosses, particularly early crosses like these when there's space to attack should be a priority. From the picture posted above Eriksen and Rose are quite close, but the Villa player had already had the time to look up and pick his cross without getting closed down properly. Again, not a huge mistake. If the cross is hit a bit off no one ever remembers this situation.

This is not really a "high line" situation, more of a counter attacking situation. We have our centre backs in our own box and not putting pressure on the Villa player until he's almost at the corner of the box. Not really a high line. A shortage of people back perhaps, which happens to most teams when getting counter attacked against. But we have enough players back to make it difficult for Villa imo.

Are we seriously talking about Benteke again?

After seeing how crucial an intelligent, mobile forward who can link with midfield (Kane) is, people want a big lump to pump long balls up to? He's an Andy Carroll waiting to happen. Look too at how Lukaku (a better player than Benteke) has also flopped at a passing side. Part of Ade's problem this season was that he was just too static for our quick transitioning.

If we got another forward this summer, they really need to be a Kane-lite.

I kind of agree with you here, although I then find it strange that you are advocating either Ings or Rodriguez (neither of which are like Kane IMO).

Ridiculous post. Comparing him to Andy Carroll is laughable, Benteke is far more skillful and adept than Carroll.
