Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

Whilst I understand that your opinion will always differ from mine in the rest of the opinion stuff in that post, I'd like to clarify this bit.

Where do you draw your line between tactics being too complicated and players being too stupid? I suspect that many Italian or Spanish players would have no problem in understanding more complicated tactics. Kyle Walker, not so much.

Do tactics have to be so simple that you can have a team of Kyle Walkers? Or is it a better solution to have a team of Alonsos and outfox the opposition with better tactics?

Well take our home performances for example, does anyone have a clue what he was trying to achieve? Obviously he was trying to win but I still don't really know how he wanted to go about it. Seemed like he either wanted to rely on a wonder goal or wear teams down then score late which is an example of overcomplicating things. Playing possession football but doing absolutely nothing with it. I'd love to see us play like Liverpool i.e. blitz teams early.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

Spurs have gone the Foreign route with managers many times in the past with precious little to show for it (Ramos' League Cup being the exception that proves the rule).

The fact remains that our greatest successes have come with English managers at the helm, usually promoted from within the club.

Didn't that manager also lead us to some pretty glaring failures too though? Two fa semi final losses, the second a shambolic 5-1 drubbing and then the 10 point lead that evaporated into thin air in a matter of weeks.

I'm not one to be seduced by foreign managers, if a British manager took over and was good enough (Brendan Rogers springs to mind) then welcome to Spurs! However Sherwood is clearly not that man. Irrespective of the stats, he has created a horrible, negative atmosphere around Tottenham Hotspur with his ridiculous tactic driven comments. A manager should unite every being at a club, Rogers is a classic example. Is it because he is British? Or is it because of the way he carries himself, talks and treats people he has to work with on a daily basis?

Sherwood has created division amongst fans but also in the dressing room it seems.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

Some do, some don't.

I'd rather we had a tactical coach and players that can understand than a "run abaat a bit" set of players and coach.

You really are the king of cliches, I'm amazed you didn't get a reference to Joe Cole in there.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

At quarter to eight this evening, they displayed each player on jumbotron as they read out the team sheets.

When they read out Sherwoods name there was a chorus of boos (it seemed, from my position, that most came from the west stand?!?!).

When they read the teams out again just before kick off, Sherwood was omitted entirely.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

I don't think that AVB's problem was that he could not communicate his ideas to the players. I think that the issue was that we sold our best player and the new players were slow to settle. I think that he also did not know what his best team was, hence the chopping and changing which probably exacerbated the issues with the players settling.
Hit the nail right on the head. We sell our best player and bring in 7 who have never played in the Prem before and there was a massive expectation for us to finish in the top four. I know Sherwood is not liked here, but no one can't fault him for speaking the truth!

http://www.footballfancast.com/prem...t-tottenham-champions-league-dream-says-boss?
“We’re taking out one of the best players in the world and replacing him with seven players who have never played in this competition before.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“How on earth did people think we would be title challengers or even make the top four?

“If you don’t know the game you could possibly think that they would all hit the floor running but it doesn’t happen, they need time.

“This club will be better with those seven players next season – they’ll have experience of the competition and they will improve from that.”

“It was hyped – the hype was ridiculous.

“We’ve qualified for the Champions League once – why have we got a divine right to qualify for the Champions League?

“Where we’ve finished in sixth is where we should be, it’s where we are as a club.

“We all want to aspire to the top four and the title but we aren’t getting there with what we’ve got.

“To remove a match winner like Gareth Bale out of that squad – we shouldn’t have expected it after that.”

we should have finished 5th not 6th. we have a right to demand we finish above everton.

points total is one way of looking at our achievement, but it clearly shows the dross below us and an imploding Man U.

we've gone backwards, everton is better than us.

While you can't argue with Sherwood's argument, its not the sort of thing you want a manager saying, is it. Leave that for the pundits, fans, etc. I want the manager to be building the team up. It's Tim's "this is as good as it gets" moment.

The main reason they finished above us is two players they don't even own. Who knows if they'll get that lucky next season.

We have gone backwards but we do not have a right to demand that we finish above anybody. We're always slating Liverpool fans for saying similar things, no club in world in football has a divine right to success or is owed anything. They're not uncatchable next season.

So your limit for complicated tactics is what you can understand?

What if we had a really intelligent coach who filled the team with players like Maldini and Pirlo (tactically - obviously we can't attract players that good) but you still didn't understand the tactics. Would you still say that our tactics were too complicated or would you just trust that the manager and the players can understand it so it doesn't matter if you do?

So again and not just to scara, what were these massively complicated tactics that were employed by avb, that our squad found difficult to understand?

You wouldn't understand. Its like voodoo. Far too complex for us.

That lacks class, amongst other things.

I don't think they were complicated - it's JtG who's professed to not understanding them. I'm perfectly capable, thanks.

So the tactics were not complicated then? Our players did understand them?

From what I saw I didn't think they were particularly complicated .... But I don't think they were particularly impressive or advanced either.

So maybe I'm missing something, so to you or any other avb 'fan' could you please explain to me avbs complicated/advanced/impressive/ prophetic/badass/soooooomuchbetterthanttim etc tactics were.

i think the players understood the tactics/instructions, the question is whether they fully believed in them....for example, Gutter Boy is pretty sure after doing his research that AVB preferred to go 1 or 2 nill up and then simply shut up shop, keep the ball, and just preserve energy for the next game. Apparently attempting to score extra goals was a waste of effort. Now if this is true, i think players would look at each other and think what the fcuk!! Its too much control, too rigid, its takes the fun out of the game

You're not missing anything. There's a certain school of thought that AVB overcomplicated things - I don't subscribe to it, JtG does. He claims not to understand those tactics, I'm merely trying to find out whether he thinks that actually matters to the success of the team.

Re: Tim Sherwood…not treated with the respect a headmaster is.

If I had the time or the inclination I would. Unfortunately explaining things to other people is neither a strong point of mine nor something I am remotely interested in.

Fortunately, someone has done the hard slog for me:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/André-Villas-Boas-Luis-Miguel-Pereira/dp/1905928084

I'd recommend it highly.

Rather than read the book, can you summaries some of the key beliefs or tactics that AVB follows. Simply as it is interesting. Far more so than a lot of the other things on here. Where do you think AVB was right with his tactical approach? I think he was probably an excellent tactician - he started scouting teams for Mourinho - but maybe he wasn't quite as good a motivator.
