The transfer thread

Haha people now jumping on the Nico Williams train. ;)

His performances thisa Euros and the increase in his profile make it increasingly less likely that we could get him. Shame really as he's standard and style of player I would love to have on the left.

But his wage demands are mental

I feel like our signings from the championship are half hearted efforts like Rodon and Spence.

We have done so well from there in the past, Bale, Carrick, Defoe etc. Always say if the Championship was a country everyone would send scouts there.

Don't expect anyone to remember my posts but I called for us to sign Eze and Olise when they were down there. Think my Adam Wharton thread is still in the transfer section.

Our transfers have gotten better but we should look to sign the best of the championship it has such good value, even with the odd dud thrown in.
Bale, yes, but it's more than a little disingenuous to count Carrick and Defoe as signings from the Championship. Sure, we technically bought them from a Championship club, but they'd both made their names in the Prem before West Ham got relegated.

What significant signings have we made from the Championship? Taking a quick look back to 2008 in Transfermarkt, we've had Spence, Clarke, Rodon, Yedlin, Trippier, Chimbonda, Bostock, Bale...and that's about it. I couldn't see anyone who hadn't featured in the Premiership at some point. Dele Alli feels like he should count, but doesn't as he was from League One.

Trippier was definitely a success, but the others? Nope. Sorry if there's anyone I've missed.

That said, I absolutely agree with you about the Championship being somewhere we should be scouting. But I think people tend to look at the success stories from other clubs and not notice all the many that didn't make it.

Actually, I've now gone back a couple more years, and found Rose, Huddlestone, Rasiak, Routledge, Lennon, Reid, Dawson, Davis, Robinson, and Davenport. So there are a few more successes. Why? Better scouting of the lower division? Being less attractive a club to foreigners? Or not being as big a step up -- in those years we were a mid-table club, remember.

Without putting too much thought into it, probably David Pleat?

I'd argue Bale did pretty well for himself... ;)

Rather have the Georgia guy tbh...both silly money though.

Yeah, I suppose he did alright!

Adding Walker and Trippier takes us to 3 good Championship signings in the last 15 years. And it's not like the others have been even moderately good.

Trippier we got for £3m and was soon in the england squad.

Yes we had misses but not huge. Most we recouped their transfer fee. It's been a net positive overall. If they were all world class they wouldn't be in the championship. They are potential. Some work, some don't.
