The reading list

I don't have a link to hand but Oborn wrote and interesting piece on Miliband for the current issue of the Spectator. Many won't agree with what he has written but I find it hard to think of another right wing commentator (or left wing one for that matter) penning the piece.

Just read that. An interesting article and well written, but I don't agree with much of it at all.

Milibland (this is now my Android keyboard's preferred spelling of his name!) hasn't taken the positions he has out of honesty or integrity. He's far too intelligent to think that any of them would benefit the UK or the world in general, he just takes those positions because those are the ones he thinks will get him his 15 minutes running the country.

Christ that goes on longer than britpop!!!
If I'd known he was a music journo (taco smiths fan) I wouldn't have read it. I gave up in the end. Music is personal and no one should ever tell you what's good or bad but this cultural claptrap and how it changes or mirrors the world is overly simplistic, self important rubbish IMO.

Interesting

The 10 greatest controversies of Winston Churchill's career

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29701767

Love it. The mystique is exposed. Nothing more than a self promoting right wing cnut. Any one who knows anything about British history and politics has always known this, but it is Britain's dirty secret. If you read his works, he was a nut job even by the standards of his day.

I did not like his views on the empire or India. But you have to take things into the context of the time he was in. Also he was a liberal MP for a period as well. I suggest a visit to the war rooms in London because in it is a Churchill exhibition. It does not gloss over his bad points at all, but it also shows some surprising facts about his life.

He was right wing at times, he was self promoting at times also, but he was very far from a cnut. That is before even getting to his career defining service to the country in the second world war, without him we would all be speaking German now, the would be no Jews in Europe and any young child today who happened to be attracted to someone of the same gender would have a very short life expectancy.

I will forgive him a few mistakes and outdated views as the good he did far outweighed the bad.

Easily the greatest Britain to ever live in my opinion.

Not even close. Shakespeare, Henry V and even Nelson trump him. He wasn't even Britain's best PM.
I would agree he was not the best Prime Minister, I doubt you would like my choice for that haha. No I do not think Prime Ministers are all that, no what Churchill did was such a large feat he quite frankly saved not only Britain but by Britain holding out he saved Europe.

The world would be so different today if it were not for him. I understand the attraction to be revisionist and try to knock down historical achievements something that one side of the political spectrum are always very keen to do. But in the case with Churchill it is quite wrong as though the guy was not without fault he most certainly was not a cnut.

I see nothing wrong with 7 & 8 on that list.

Believing muslamic infidels to be no more than a dangerous bunch of mentals probably wasn't far wide of the mark either.

You're right - he was second best. Thatcher was the best by a significant margin.

Clem Attlee was the best British prime minister of the 20th century. He drew the nation together and introduced some decency into the nation through a full implementation of the Beveridge Report. Thatcher was a divider and a wrecker. People laud her economic 'achievements' when all she did was sell off the farm. Bugger Scara, you got me started on the Milk Snatcher when I said I didn't want to in the other thread. Well done.
