I find it hard to believe that someone with the profile of Son couldn't say to his sponsor ' your boots are not suitable for me, get me another pair of boots that I can actually play in.' I would imagne Addidas would fall over backwards to appease him.

Perhaps a little hyperbolic? He did an interview where he said he was finding his boots last season to be a problem. I think in other places at multiple times when last season was coming up/has come up, he's been his usual honest self and taken full responsibility...responsibility, BTW< which I personally think has at times been a little too much. He was still very productive last season, this despite being played to within an inch of his health/fitness.
