The Cricket Thread

We've only won something like 4 tests in India in the past 50 years. Don't know why this time we thought it would be any different.

Actually think this may help us come Ashes. Poms must think winning is a certainty, can definitely see us catching you guys napping, like you did to us in 2005.

Nah I don't think we'll be that complacent. Particularly after the poor showing in NZ.

With Saker, Gooch & Flower in charge there is no way we will be complacent, far from it..

Ill be expecting a far improved performance from England from May onwards firstly against the Kiwi's

Heard yesterday that the tickets for the Ashes series in Oz at end of the year are not going on sale until after this summer's series, obviously worried about interest with how the team is doing currently, at least they know the English will turn up in force as always..

Bonus payday so booking my flights today, well excited its when planning and possibility turns into reality wahoooooooooooo !!!!

Attacked again, this lad is always in trouble it seems

The manager of Jesse Ryder has confirmed that the New Zealand cricketer is out of an induced coma and has been talking.

The 28-year-old was admitted to Christchurch hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning after being the victim of a vicious attack outside a bar.

Ryder suffered multiple injuries after being set upon, including a fractured skull and a punctured lung, and was put into an induced coma.

However, the all-rounder has made encouraging progress over the past couple of days and his manager, Aaron Klee, has now delivered a positive bulletin on his condition.

"Jesse's condition has improved to the extent that he is now out of the induced coma and off the ventilator," Klee explained.

"Jesse is awake and talking to us, but he is obviously still working through the immediate effects from being in the coma and the drugs the medical team have been using.
Thrilled

"Naturally we are thrilled with this progress. This is only the start of the recovery process for Jesse and there is still a big battle ahead to full health, but the progress is positive."

Police investigating the incident revealed they had charged a 20-year-old man and a 37-year-old relative of his with the assault and they would appear in court next Thursday.

Police said "two or three" people attacked Ryder as he left a bar and then resumed the assault when the injured player made his way to the car park of a fast-food outlet across the road.

Although Ryder has a history of alcohol-related incidents and had been drinking before he was attacked, police said alcohol was not a factor in this instance.

Ryder is in self-imposed exile from international cricket while he addresses "personal issues" and has rejected calls to return to the New Zealand team despite an outstanding domestic season.

I hope so I've got $50 a test with a guy in my office, running for both Ashes series.

Optimism however is the mother of all fcuk ups, as Spurs fans we should know that..

Shane Watson has stepped down as Australia vice-captain in all formats less than three months before the first Ashes Test.

The 31-year-old all-rounder said he has given up the role to concentrate on improving his game.

"I think it's the right time for a change for both the team and me," said Watson, who captained the side in their fourth Test defeat by India in March.

"I want to be the best Test player I can be for Australia."

He added: "I can do that by stepping down from the vice captaincy to focus my attention on scoring runs, taking wickets and doing whatever is necessary to help the team achieve success.

Watson averaged 16.5 runs with the bat, his highest innings total being just 28 despite relinquishing bowling duties to concentrate on his run-scoring.

He was also among four players dropped for the third Test after failing to provide a presentation to coach Mickey Arthur on team strategy, although he captained the side in the fourth Test following injury to Michael Clarke.

Watson was named vice-captain in March 2011 but has not scored a Test century since October 2010.

Australia will hope his decision to give up the role will prompt an upturn in form with the first Ashes Test against England beginning on 10 July at Trent Bridge.

"I wrestled with the decision for some time. However, once I made up my mind, I informed Cricket Australia so the selectors could consider their options for the Ashes given the squads will be announced soon," said Watson.

"I won't be the vice-captain in title but I think I can still be a leader and strong contributor around the group."

Cricket Australia insist the decision will not affect his selection.

National selector John Inverarity said: "Shane Watson should be commended for making the tough call to step down from the vice-captaincy to focus on playing.

"Regardless, he will still be an important senior leader within the team."

Watson isn't universally loved within the team, and he and Clarke have hated each other for years. Add to the fact Watson's a pretty boy flog. I'd much prefer if he retired from test cricket altogether to bang his gorgeous wife full time from now on.

Chris Gayle set a new record for the fastest century in professional cricket by reaching 100 off 30 balls.

The West Indies batsman, 33, beat Australian Andrew Symonds's 34-ball ton in 2004 and he went on to record the highest Twenty20 score of 175 not out.

Gayle smashed 17 sixes and 13 fours in a 66-ball knock, beating Brendan McCullum of New Zealand's 158 not out.

His Royal Challengers Bangalore side hit a T20 record 263-5 and beat Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League.

That score eclipsed the previous best of 260, set by Sri Lanka against Kenya in Johannesburg in September 2007.

Gayle also took two wickets late in the Pune innings as they scored 133-9 in reply, with Royal Challengers winning by 130 runs.

I dont want us to simply beat the Aussies I want us to grind them into the ground and destroy them, just like the Australia teams of old used to do to us..

Utter and total humiliation, no let up...

England squad for first Test: Alastair Cook (Essex, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Nick Compton (Somerset), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Matt Prior (Sussex, wk), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire).

Hope Root gets a place, has scored 2 big hundreds and a double already, 1st player to 500 runs this season, he looks a huge talent...
