The case for the defence

In focussing more on the full backs and the lack of any rotation
I like Reguilion, I always have done. I see no reason why he shouldn't be getting minutes here and there or even starts in the lower priority games. That sort of rotation might have helped Udogie who sadly seems to be going backwards in all aspects of his game.

The same applies with Spence and for Porro. I know Spence has had an injury spell but before that he wasn't really getting the minutes it feels like he could have done.

The Gray experiment at FB hasn't worked, he's significantly worse defensively than Reguilion has ever been and I haven't seen any evidence of offensive rubbing from FB. He's also looked out of his depth at RB the few times he's been over there.

Square pegs in square holes and we could have had Reggie as LB backup, Spence as RB backup (and LB) and Gray getting minutes in midfield which would probably progress him more in the long run.

I don’t think gray is worse
Imo he is better as he marks a man
Reggie isn’t the answer but soence can cover both sides and should be getting 30 mins a game imo

I suspect Reguilon is likely to have pre-contract with someone in January, we are just cutting losses.

Agree with Spence, he should have had more game time.

I'd like to have a defence. I think it would help us not leak goals like we're doing. And preferably one that doesn't let people have free headers to score against us.

Gray is terrible at LB. 🤣 he's gotten destroyed by every winger he's faced up to now. I don't see it as an issue as he's not a LB but nah he's not been good there. Reguilion is levels better than him in that role.

Reggie is the Forrest Gump of footballers for me
I still think he would be a good wing back but his brain isn’t coordinated with his feet
The roam game first half gray was constantly outnumberwd
Second half he thought sod it, I’ll mark the man wherever he goes and I thought he was great
But he ain’t a full back
He reminds of park when he was at United. He would be an outstanding man marker

I was at the Quarabag game and Gray got abused by whoever was playing RW for them. It wasn't even a numbers things he just couldn't cope and that's been the case in every game he's played LB in.

He isn’t a left back, like you say
But Reggie isn’t in a possession side

I'd rather the none possessional LB then the guy who is playing out of position and badly.

Maybe training is showing something different but I've seen Reguilion play LB and he was levels above Gray in that role and that's no shade to Gray. He's just not a LB.

And we will be
Ange has mismanaged the squad this year and that’s on him
But the obscene scale of the injuries we’re getting is mental
Some of that is course down to how we play but the scale of luck or bad luck involved is madness

Wonder if we might’ve avoided this injury crisis at the back had Postecoglou not tried to play van de Ven at LWB against Emirates Marketing Project, as everything seems to have snowballed since that hamstring injury and at the time the only defender who weren’t match fit was Spence.

  • Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their last 22 Premier League home games
  • since the start of November 2023, no side currently in England’s top four tiers have recorded fewer home league shutouts

As that link notes,

"Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their past 22 Premier League home games (4-0 against
Everton this season), in a run which started with a 4-1 loss against Chelsea in November 2023."

Once again the "sliding doors" Chelsea game!

Fundamentally, this is unsustainable. In 21 of our last 22 games we have had to score twice to win. At home! And that is with us having weakened teams and full strength line ups. It suggests, if we needed confirmation, that it is the reality of Angeball in the Premier League. I am guessing that Angeball, Celtic edition, was not like this? Anyone know?

Answering my own question, from an article in 2022 after a title win:

MISERLY DEFENCE

No side has scored more than two goals against Celtic in any one league game this term. Aside from the 20 clean sheets, there have been 14 single-goal efforts against the Hoops and only four two-goal games by the opposition. Even then, of those four games, the Celts still won three of them - Dundee 4-2, Aberdeen 3-2 and Dundee again 3-2, with the 2-1 defeat at Tynecastle in the opening game being the only negative. Only 22 goals were scored against the Celts in the 38 games and a goal difference of 70 was attained to Rangers’ 49.

Comparing his record at Celtic with his current employment:

Scotland
10 June 2021
6 June 2023
11383121873.45
England
6 June 2023
Present
6232102051.61

This is what I mean about availability’s though
The quality questions is a matter of opinion
But if you can’t rest your only fit left wing because the other 3 options are injured you have a problem
Potentially on Sunday Ange will be without 3 of his 4 CBS, 1 of which is a convert CB. That’s not a squad planning issue IMO because 4 CBS is quite normal for a squad but losing 75% of them at the same time is horrendous
What does bother me though is at full back and also Cb where he did have options to rotate, he chose not too
That’s on him
Even now he ain’t playing Spence when he can
