The best Spurs team of all time - right wing forward

Who is the best right mid, right wing, right inside forward, or inside right to play for Spurs?

  • Total voters
    41

It would be a very functional unit, but it wouldn't be the best possible XI.

People have got different reasons for nominating and voting for players. That is the whole point of doing this, or at least part of the reason, the other is to have a natter and talk about players that we love. I don't think that there is a right team that we ought to pick, besides it's about the journey and not the destination.

Waddle was more regularly threatening than Anderton, so my vote will be going to him. Not happy though, as he was only with us for five minutes, like a lot of others who will get into this side, such as Modric and Bale et al. Legends should be long termers, five seasons at least. So bugger it, I'm voting for Anderton. He was almost as good and stuck by us when things were pretty crap. That has to count for something.

So you won't be voting for Gazza then.

People can and should vote however they want. Some are voting for legends or on reputation, some are only voting for players that they have seen. I think that both are valid. It's just a bit of fun after all.

Then again, we are a bunch of nerds on an internet forum, so you have to expect us to take this more seriously than normal people would. :)

Of the players I've seen personally, my short-list would include... Waddle, Allen, Anderton, Davies, Lennon.

I'd definitely make a case for Paul Allen. Very good player. Also I think one of only two main players (along with Mabbutt) who transcended our great 86/87 Pleat side and our 91 cup winning Venables side

But while Allen was a good player in two great sides, Davies was just a solid player in a dreadful side

As much as I'd like to have a convincing argument against that statement, you're probably right if truth be told. It's very sobering, though, when you realise just how bad we were 15 years ago... so bad in fact, that Simon Davies stands out in my memory is a quality player. Christ.

Again, going for players I have seen, I'd have to pick Anderton or Lennon. Probably the former...

Not sure I would include Paul Allen and would replace with Ossie Ardiles who often played on the right side of midfield

Would be a bit odd competing against the two actual right wingers from his side/time (Waddle and Allen)

Plus if Ardiles goes under RW, we probably have to allow Modric at LW

I just can't think of waddle as a right winger for Spurs, I know he played there for England in the 90 World Cup and later in his career for other teams, but for us he was a left winger the vast majority of his time.

I've only seen footage of cliff Jones but I'm old enough to have seen waddle and those are the two I would go for, one either side swapping when the need arises. I know it's only the RW just now and I've picked RW and LW but that's how i see it.

Allen and Ardilles both spent a fair bit of time playing both centrally and wide, Waddle played off both flanks and was an emergency CF on a few occasions as well iirc

Allen, Waddle and Hodge tended to interchange is the AM trio. Ardilles was often the deepest of the 5 midfielders (similar to the Modric-Huddlestone partnership role)
