The Stone Roses is the debut album by English rock band The Stone Roses, released on Silvertone Records in 1989. It cemented the band's reputation among critics, and is still rated by some as one of the most influential albums ever recorded.[6] In 2004 an Observer Music Monthly poll consisting of musicians and critics voted the album the greatest of all time, as did the writers of NME in 2006, declaring it to be the greatest British album of all time.[7][8] It is widely considered the seminal record of the Madchester movement that was active in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and as being highly responsible for the mid-1990s resurrection of British guitar music that came to be known as Britpop.[9]

Wish You Were Here is the ninth studio album by the English progressive rock group Pink Floyd, released in September 1975. It explores themes of absence, the music business and former band member Syd Barrett's mental decline. Inspired by material the band composed while performing across Europe, Wish You Were Here was recorded in numerous sessions at London's Abbey Road Studios. The premise of the album was based on a song written by the band called "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". "Shine On" was a tribute to Barrett, who, coincidentally, made an impromptu visit to the studio while it was being recorded. It was lead writer Roger Waters's idea to split the "Shine On" in two parts and use it to bookend the album around three new compositions, forming a new concept similar to their previous album, The Dark Side of the Moon.

As with that record, the band made use of studio effects and synthesizers for Wish You Were Here. Additionally, the band brought in guest singers to supply their vocals to some tracks, another feature from their previous album. These singers included Roy Harper, who provided the lead vocals on "Have a Cigar", and The Blackberries, who made guest background vocals on "Shine On". Wish You Were Here was released in September 1975. The album became an instant commercial success and record company EMI was unable to print enough copies to satisfy demand. Although it initially received mixed reviews, the album has since been acclaimed by critics and appears on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour have each declared Wish You Were Here their favourite Pink Floyd album.

another tricky one Milo

I love the Stone Roses, i've listened to this album a thousand times, its wonderful, and its inspired so many other albums that I love. Floyd are Floyd though.

An easy one for me this. I can still remember the first time I heard the Stone Roses as if it was yesterday. I walked into a record shop and they were playing on the stereo. It must have been just before the album was released. I have bought this album four or five times through wearing out copies. I don't listen to it as much now days because I prefer to listen to new stuff but whenever I put it on, I have to play it all the way through. I think that pretty much everything about this album is perfect and I can only think of a handful of debut albums that come close to it.

I much prefer Floyd before Walters' ego got out of hand. Dark Side is my cut off point and I struggle quite a bit with a lot of that.

i'm in and out with Floyd myself, the early stuff isn't my cup of tea and from the split i'm definitely more in the Gilmour camp, but in the middle they were awesome

I love the Barrett stuff and his solo albums, I don't mind the first few Floyd albums after Barrett left but from the mid-seventies onwards they leave me cold. Far too muso and polished for my tastes. I like music with the rough edges left on and a bit of soul.

i like the guitar ****ery, Gilmour is one of the finest at that, comfortably numb gets me every time, even if it was played at a funeral i'd break out the air guitar, can't resist a riff

This is an age thing perhaps. Wish You Were Here is the first album I heard (wearing headphones) on a top notch separates sound system in 1976. Prior to alcohol or any other intoxicants. Mind blown. The Stone Roses album is magnificent, but Floyd wins this one for me.

Gilmour's a good guitarist and a decent bloke by all accounts. Squire is no slouch either and the production and guitar sound on the Stone Roses is top notch.

absolutely, its not a sleight on him, merely a preference

i'm not a total fan boy knowing all the hangers on by the way, just so happen to be reading pigs might fly at the minute

Man...these topics...I don't have the time to get into them like I want to!!!!!

I tell you what Steff, it doesn't get much easier. There is something to discuss/think about on every one of the first round ties and it is only going to get harder from here.

I used to promote bands and still put on the occasional club night and he was someone I spoke to and nicked some ideas off when I was starting out.

cool, amazing the stuff they came up with enhance the show, even if it left them covered in gunk by the time they finished their set
