NextGen Series: Ajax vs Chelsea Tuesday 29.01.13 – 19:00 De Toekomst
The group stage has come down to its final match, and all is on the line.
The clash sees
English legends Chelsea face Dutch counterparts Ajax, in a match that determines the draw for the first knock-out round.
Ten of the final sixteen clubs left are affected by Tuesday’s outcome, making it a vital match. Depending on results either side could find themselves travelling to Spain to face Barcelona, Ajax could face Spurs or Chelsea could face Aston Villa, amongst other possibilities. The draw will be announced directly after the final whistle.
Ajax came into the season as one of the teams to beat after their scintillating run last year carried them all the way to the final, where they were eventually beaten on penalties by Inter. Their attacking, quick-tempo football created goals and earned them the support of many neutrals along the way. After dominating matches such as their 5 -1 victory over Fenerbahcè (click here to view highlights) many players such as Viktor Fischer (click here for more on Fischer) and Davy Klaassen began to get noticed. This season both teenagers now feature in Ajax’s first team plans.
Despite only being Chelsea’s debut season, the Champions League holders came in with their own credentials. Having produced talents such as John Terry, Ryan Bertrand and Carlton Cole,
their academy is renowned for developing English talent. In recent years not only have they produced players of such calibre, but two F.A Youth Cups in the last three years have proven their competitive edge at this level.
Drawn in Group 3 with PFC CSKA and Molde, Ajax and Chelsea were perhaps expected to be the two battling for first place. Russian giants CSKA, however proved to be one of the stand-out teams of the season and a series of professional performances leaves them top of the group (click here to see how it currently stands). Composed displays from their defence meant they conceded just five goals, a feat that only Ajax and Chelsea managed to beat. However it is these sides’ goal scoring that has grabbed the headlines so far.
After results such as a 5 – 0 victory over Molde (click here for highlights) it is Ajax’s Viktor Fischer (last season’s joint top scorer) that leads their scoring with four goals in just two games, followed by dynamic midfielder El Hasnoui with two. If Fischer continues to feature in de Boer’s first team plans it is likely the home side will turn to 17-year-old Queensy Menig to lead their front line. The young Dutch forward has been at the club for over five years now, and has already scored in the Series – he will be one for the Chelsea back line to watch.
Interestingly one of the players Chelsea are likely to turn to for inspiration is Dutch youth international Nathan Ake. The versatile defender can also play in midfield and has even captained his country at youth level, while his presence at the back has helped Chelsea concede just three.
At their opposite end it will be players such as Scottish youth international Islam Feruz, who leads their scoring with two, who they look to for goals. Due to their style of attacking as a group, Chelsea score with a range of players from all positions; they bettered Ajax by beating Molde 6 – 0 at home (click here for highlights) and in doing so shared the six goals between five players.
The knock-out fixtures all come down to this encounter. Two of the highest scoring sides pitched against each other with the clubs of Europe watching.
