The Academy, NextGen, U18 & U21 Premier League and On-Loan Thread

This UEFA Youth League is hilarious. Quite why people would to watch or participate in it when the Next Gen series is just far superior is beyond me.

Are people really going to want to prefer to watch/participate in a competition where the teams aren't as good? Just because it is a CL qualified first team it doesn't mean the youth set up is any good. For instance our youth team can give Barca's a thrashing, but if we don't qualify for CL this year our youth team can't play against them? Rubbish. Much prefer to watch City and Chelsea's who do fudge all!

I feel sorry for the Next Gen creators though, and for the clubs whose team's won't qualify for the CL. I can imagine a lot of teams deciding only to do one, which would be the UEFA one. This then reduces the quality of Next Gen, if you take the likes of Barca out of it for example.

Although...maybe it won't reduce the quality at all, because the point remains that just because the club's first team is in the CL, it doesn't mean their youth setup is any good.

Scott Parker continued his comeback by playing for our Under-21s in a Barclays U21 Premier League encounter at Sunderland on Monday.

The midfielder - in the final phase of his recovery from an Achilles injury - played the full 90 minutes as the team suffered a 2-1 loss at the Academy of Light.

“Scott was outstanding in his application, attitude and how he managed the game,” said Senior Professional Phase Coach, Chris Ramsey.

It was a rare defeat for the Under-21s, who remain top of National Group Two of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League with one match remaining and set for a place in the Elite Group in the second half of the campaign.

The team travelled to Wearside on the back of five-successive wins and were unbeaten in eight since August.

Things started well as Cristian Ceballos cut in from the right, beat two defenders and curled into the top corner for a spectacular goal to open the scoring in the 18th minute.

Sunderland hit back to level through Ryan Noble in the 32nd minute and then scored what turned out to be the winner six minutes later when Connor Oliver headed home from Adam Mitchell’s corner.

Chris reported: “I thought we did well in difficult, windy conditions. We had to adapt our normal game to those conditions and it was another learning curve for the players against a competitive Sunderland team.

“Cristian scored a fantastic goal, but they scored two quick goals and that was basically down to naive defending.

“There was a bit if hesitation that led to the first goal and the second came from a corner, a decent set-piece from their point of view but one we failed to deal with.

“We had more than enough chances to win the game. Jon Obika had one at the near post from a corner and a one-on-one where he managed to beat the goalkeeper but missed from the angle, Alex Pritchard missed the target from a cutback, Souleymane Coulibaly had a couple after coming on and Jack Barthram had a header at the far post. They were clear-cut chances as well, not just half-chances.

“Overall though, we were pleased. It was a tough, physical game and a real test for us but we continued to play the style of football we wanted to play."

Spurs U21s (4-3-3):

Vigouroux

Barthram, Hall, Veljkovic (Gallifuoco, 78 ), Stewart

Parrett (Coulibaly, 60), Parker, Luongo

Pritchard (Munns, 78 ), Obika, Ceballos.

Unused sub: Priestley.

Can't help thinking that the fixture schedule hasn't helped us.

OUr U21's were on a fantastic, high scoring, winning streak at the time that they won their last match. Bet they would happily have played every day.

But they've since had a three week hiatus, during which time they've doubtless lost a bit of sharpness and momentum.

Yes, there was a training friendly against Ipswich Town (lost 1-5) but that's not the same as playing a competitive match.

Spurs will be in the U21 Elite Group regardless of the result of our last away match at Villa, so we should be in for some very interesting matches in 2013.

U-21 needs experience and exposure, it's a crucial stage of their professional career, either make or break. Win or lose might not be of much importance to U-18, as most probably still need to develop their skills.

The result, the order of the goals, the description of the first goal, Ramsey's comment on 'naive defending' and the mention 'hesitation' during their first goal... sounds a lot like a replay of the game on sunday?

SPURS LOAN WATCH:

It was a case of unlucky 14 for Adam Smith and Millwall at Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The full-back completed another 90-minute shift for the Lions, who travelled to Portman Road on the back of a 13-match unbeaten run in the Championship.

But it ended there as two goals from DJ Campbell and one from Darryl Murphy secured a 3-0 win for Ipswich.

In League One, John Bostock was involved early in the move that led to Matt Ritchie opening the scoring for Swindon, but opponents Doncaster were soon level via an own goal and it stayed 1-1 at the County Ground.

Nathan Byrne was an unused substitute as Crawley drew 2-2 against Shrewsbury.

Jordan Archer started again for Wycombe and the Chairboys looked good for another win in League Two when they went 2-0 up against Morecambe, but the visitors hit back to equalise in the final minute and it ended 2-2 at Adams Park.

In the Premier League, Danny Rose had impressive reports again at left-back even though Sunderland slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

Young goalkeeper Jonathan Miles made a number of fine saves for Brentwood in a 6-3 win against Soham in Ryman League Division One North.

Away from the UK, Bongani Khumalo played a full shift in PAOK's 1-0 win against Levadiakos in the Greek Super League. PAOK remain second, now eight points adrift of Olympiacos, who were held to a 2-2 draw by our Europa League opponents last week, Panathinaikos.

Danny Rose had a good 70 mins against Reading tonight, before being taken off with a niggling injury.

The Sunderland fans were constantly singing their song about him. Commentator was raving about him as well.

Given our lack of cover for BAE it seems a bit strange that we haven't recalled him. Verts doesn't look comfortable there.

I thinks its a season long loan. He should stay at Sunderland and play week in/out. With BAE coming back,Verts proving to be a solid LB and Naughton for cup games etc really no need to recall him. Hopefully we keep him because he has looked impressive this season, him and BAE would be excellent at LB.

ADAM SMITH is in talks with Millwall over extending his loan spell from Tottenham until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old made his Premier League debut for Spurs last season, but has found opportunities at White Hart Lane limited this term.

Smith joined The Lions on an initial three-month deal in November, having previously spent time at Bournemouth, MK Dons and Leeds over the past two years.

The Londoner has represented England at almost every age-group up to U-21 level.

Good for him but i was hoping we might have been able to do what we did with the two kyles and get him up into the prem for the end of season to a club like swansea or southampton.

I hope he can come back next year and compete with walker, then maybe rose to come back as back up to ekotto and we can naughton and use the money in another part of the team.

I think livermore has showed that even if you do not make the first team by 20 the is still afuture for you. Starting to think our youth players may come through a little later then we might have expected. Use to be thought that if a player had not gotten into the first team by 19 he would not make it, im glad to see us moving away from that, some players develop later then others.
