Speakers Corner Hyde Park

Sorry I didn't see anyone speaking against him besides us. They let him sprout hate even to the fact that he had a problem that my woman is black. (Im white) no one spoke up either. They either agreed with him or they were scared and intimidated.

I just saw people laughing at his disgusting mouth. Only one guy spoke up and he was ex army.

I'd like to think even if you are of the same faith you wouldn't want idiots who discredit and preach hate about your religion. Why wouldn't they speak up?

For fear of being stabbed or beaten up, presumably

One lady who attends every week said that a mosque funds them. Don't know how true it is.

And yes there were racists.

There were two guys both in their late 20s early 30s

One was bald about 5ft 7. Muscular and Asian looking.

Other was about 6ft Asian looking. Same sort of hair as Kyle walker.

Both ugly

Was this today or yesterday?

You should see the vitriol Muslims put up with when they do a stall for preaching. I went to one for 2 weeks in Luton last year to observe with a friend who preaches. We got sworn at and abused hourly. Never for a second did I believe it was an accurate representation of the attitude of the people of my country. And I never shared my bad experience with other Muslims as stirring up hatred is part of the problem.

There are idiotic Muslims and they are not paid by mosques. That is unsubstantiated bollox.

And to the clowns who did abuse the anti Islam preacher. They need to respect freedom of speech. It's part of the fabric of this society. Like it or leave it.
If if helps I call Christians ****s when they set up a preaching stand in the town centre too....

Lol I actually don't mind. It's what you expect in free society. I think the right to speak without crossing the line of acceptability in society is something I feel strongly about.

Lutonspurs. It's my opinion that religious views should be discussed in churches or mosques or synagogues or wherever else not in the street where people, generally, don't want to hear it. It's OT again sorry but I think most would agree.

That's because you don't like religion I assume?

Your opinion doesn't hold value by the society we live in. If we stopped people from being able to do such things we would be extremists who refuse people basic civil liberties and free speech. It's part of tolerance not to listen and ignore something if you don't like it. Wanting it out of sight from public view because you dont like it is extremism for me.

I'm a Christian. I believe in GHod but I don't want someone telling me about religion out on the street. I do ignore it if I hear it in the street. Completely disagree with your last sentence though and take exception to it being labelled 'extremism'. Let people believe what they want and come along to churches etc if they want to. It's only an opinion something else is part of this wonderful, wonderful country we live in!

None of this is a dig at you btw just an opinion.

Sorry didn't mean to sound like I called you an extremist but in a liberal democracy a stance like that is just wrong. Think about it. I couldn't ask people to stop selling stuff on stalls because I didn't like what they sold. These people sell their idea of enlightenment. It's their basic right to do so. I don't understand how that could be wrong.

Your analogy isn't exactly like for like though. People go to market stalls to browse and with the intent to buy. People don't go out to hear religious views enforced on them. I wouldn't call it wrong but I certainly disagree with the idea.

They aren't enforced.

I think it's a good place. If you are interested you stay and listen. If you are not you move on.

I went on Sunday. Just remembered the intimidators where also racist to a Chinese bloke. Telling him to go home and taking the **** out of his accent.

Auroraman I don't know what places in London you refer to but it's certainly not safe walking around the areas I do ie Haringay, Edmonton, Tottenham and seven sisters. I can only assume you mean the nicer parts?

As paper cut says in a round about way there are idiots everywhere. If there's one thing I can't stand it's people telling people what they should or shouldn't do or should or shouldn't wear. This is England. The burka is not part of the English culture to start with. If your faith dictates you wear a burka then wear one!

They finally opened up a Costa coffee on the corner near seven sisters station, things are getting better! Seriously, though I have seen slight changes in demographic in seven sisters and surrounding areas, if you look at the customers in that costa there appears to be more yuppie types. It's only as I pass through so have a coffee in there that I noticed. Also a mate was saying that as places like Stoke Newington/Dalston are too expensive to buy, people are buying in Tottenham.

Wholeheartedly agree. If everyone could just accept diversity and the fact that different people have different lifestyles (as long it doesn't include harming other people of course), the world would be a much better place to live in. You don't have to like it, just accept it.

That sort of back and forth at Speakers Corner has been going on for decades. Many of the speakers crave it, that's why they go there. Not all of them of course, sometimes it's just punters who decide to give it a go and stand up to speak. But many of the "regulars" go precisely for the banter - it's to be expected. Today the hot topic is Islam, in the '80s it was about Thatcher, socialism, nationalization of industry, etc. It has almost never been particularly genteel.

I was on holiday in Germany recently. In one town was a Hare Krishna guy singing into a portable amplifier / loudspeaker all day every day for a week I was there, just singing and moaning and annoying most people allll day.

He was not a good advert for that religion!

Does anyone remember that fella who was at Oxford Circus with the megaphone. 'Dont be a sinner be a winner' was his catchphrase. Banged on about Jesus all day long. He was always there for about ten years. Whatever happened to him?
