Speakers Corner Hyde Park

Spursman

Neil Sullivan
I was in Hyde park yesterday and came across a crowd of people. Me and the Mrs walked over to see what was going on. I stumbled across speakers corner a place where anything can be spoken about. Free speech or so i thought.

I didnt know about this place but found it very interesting to begin with. All people from all faiths were giving their talks and opinions.

So one guy was talking about Islam. He wasnt saying anything bad but was being heckled. A group of young Muslims were being very aggressive and intimidating towards him. He did well and stood his ground and carried on. One Muslim prick was basically saying its all a lie blah blah blah. People were standing and listening and he didn't like it. So he started saying to the speaker that you are Gay and have got aids. I am not one to tolerate such **** from someone as ignorant as that and nor is my Mrs. So i said to him "oi watch what you are saying, he can say what he wants just like the other speakers. If you dont like it move on" There is no need to be rude to the man and say just horrible things. England is about freedom of speech. We aren't oppressed people. He said this isnt England anymore! i had to agree with him on that one!

Anyway things moved on and the speaker was talking about Hijabs/Burkas. He said women should not have to cover everything up. The muslim guy went on and said women who dress without it arent respected, so my Mrs said why dont you cover yourself up then! he turned round and said you need to cover up. I said she can wear what she bloody wants here. A women is respected for their actions not by how they look you fool. Guy behind of me said "i fought for this country so people can have freedom to say and wear what they want" He started getting aggressive again giving it all that. He soon went away to bother someone else as we were not prepared to be intimidated by this idiot. Then some old man was debating with the speaker and not talking English. So i said speak English so we can understand your debate. So he comes up to my Mrs invading her space talking back to her. My Mrs insulted him and he called her rubbish haha i said id like to see the state of your wife ( he insulted her coz she as some nice leggings on and a crop top) she looked good and he could only dream of getting someone like her)

So me and the Mrs went to listen to another speaker and an old lady came up to us and said well done for standing your ground. We started having a conversation. Another dingdong walks over in the middle of our conversation. So i was like "yeh can i help you? he said "no i can stand here" I said this is a private conversation and you arent included in it so go away". He then shouts oooohhh you're racist!! he was just being a nuisance but very aggressive with it. im like what you talking about! So again he try's to intimidate us because we didn't agree with him. We just stood our ground and i told him to **** off somewhere else. It was very hard for me to bite my tongue and not act on my aggression. Even the old lady who attends every week said its different here now. It much more militant. I saw 2 other girls being bothered by the same guy. He told her to go away and have a drink at the pub. Again trying to intimate all the women in the vicinity.

I understand speakers corner has been going on for years. Its seems a great place, its just a shame its being taken over. Some people wont attend again because of the intimidation.

I have really had enough of this country. Its really going to ****. In fact so is most of Europe. So many ignorant people who dont let people speak. They are so brainwashed is very sad. Makes me want to live somewhere far away.

On another more lighthearted thing i came across.

You had this lady talking about "preserving blonds" basically saying all blonds should be with other blonds. She was a black lady to! haha made us laugh.

Wow. The guys that confronted you sound like a right bunch of bellends. How pathetic that they feel the need to attend Speakers Corner to basically goad and intimidate people.

On the note of this country and Europe going downhill. Don't lose heart mate. I was away for three years and it took that time away to come back and realise things aren't as bad as we/the media make out. I've travelled to a lot of capital cities, and although my quality of life has been better in others, I still maintain London is the greatest city on the planet. I don't know if things have actually changed or whether I am coming back with fresh eyes, but I feel safe walking around and in general the people I know and Londoners I interact with are generally positive.

Having travelled around Europe, my opinion is that we have some fan-bloody-tastic countries to visit and even settle if you wished to. I currently have friends that have moved permanently to Holland, Germany and Copenhagen recently. They cannot exult the virtues of where they are living enough. We have it good here (Europe). Something the nobs that verbally abused you and your other half would do well to remember.

Yeh maybe i need to travel more and live somewhere else for a bit rather than just take a vacation there.

I love London and all it stands for. I love that we can have places like Speakers corner to discuss and debate anything. I love the history of London. I just think this country has lost its identity. People are afraid to speak up for what they believe in because of intimidation by idiots like i mentioned.

I've always wanted to go to speakers corner when I'm in London, but I always imagined people like David Icke being there not the scene you described. Doesn't sound like much fun really.

Zealots ruining people's fun

I will be going back in a couple of weeks to see if those idiots are around. I was told that the Mosque probably pay them to be there and debunk non islamic talks. It was still interesting regardless of idiots. It takes a lot to intimidate me so those prats dont put me off. In fact they are making me want to go even more.

Wow! you encountered uneducated (angry) eejits who may have come from uneducated (angry) backgrounds with clichéd thoughts in the city of London... There's a surprise!

What reaction are you after here? That there are people (potentially) from a Muslim background that regurgitate ****e they are fed by other (angry) ill-informed people?

Did you notice the other potentially Muslim people who listened and perhaps added to the debate or other debates in speaker's corner?

I see posts like this on certain British online media forums and it kicks up a humorous backlash from equally uneducated (angry) bunch of people - at least those in Hyde Park dare show their funny faces.

C'est la vie fella; idiots are everywhere...

Auroraman I don't know what places in London you refer to but it's certainly not safe walking around the areas I do ie Haringay, Edmonton, Tottenham and seven sisters. I can only assume you mean the nicer parts?

As paper cut says in a round about way there are idiots everywhere. If there's one thing I can't stand it's people telling people what they should or shouldn't do or should or shouldn't wear. This is England. The burka is not part of the English culture to start with. If your faith dictates you wear a burka then wear one!

You should see the vitriol Muslims put up with when they do a stall for preaching. I went to one for 2 weeks in Luton last year to observe with a friend who preaches. We got sworn at and abused hourly. Never for a second did I believe it was an accurate representation of the attitude of the people of my country. And I never shared my bad experience with other Muslims as stirring up hatred is part of the problem.

There are idiotic Muslims and they are not paid by mosques. That is unsubstantiated bollox.

And to the clowns who did abuse the anti Islam preacher. They need to respect freedom of speech. It's part of the fabric of this society. Like it or leave it.

Lutonspurs quick question. Why do we need stalls for preaching? Whether its Muslim, Christianity or any other religion do we really need people spouting off publicly with all the tension nowadays? Sorry to go OT.

Hello mate. I find most areas safe to walk around. The areas you mention I concede such as Tottenham and Edmonton can be an exception to the rule. Having said that, I know people that are starting to buy property there because it seems there's going to be a big regeneration and what some might call hipsterfication (!), in much the same way areas in East London have progressed over the last few years. It may be that I spend most of my time in 'nicer' parts of London, such as Highgate/Hampstead, Blackheath/Greenwich (thats as south as I like to go ;) ), Islington etc. I don't have any problem walking through the city or central, I work mainly in the Shoreditch area and even when venturing up towards Bethnal Green etc I don't find myself having to put my guard up.

That may allude to what I wrote in my post to Spursman, perhaps I've come back with fresh eyes and because I don't assume trouble is around, I don't attract it? Before I left to go abroad I'd go through certain areas with my guard fully up, and when I walked past the group of youths thinking they would probably start something, sure enough sometimes they would. I don't feel like that anymore for the most part and maybe this 'no fear' attitude sends out a different signal to scrotes that would normally want to cause mischief. Could be complete ******** and maybe London has become safer or I'm deluded? I also don't feel any simmering tensions within different cultures out and about, far from it I feel the opposite, with such a melting pot of colours and cultures generally interacting harmoniously. Again, could be just the circle I surround myself in and the areas i venture, or maybe we shouldn't be taking notice of the extremist sects on all sides trying to kid us into believing that there is some tense war waging on the streets, and everything is going down the pan.

The stall is done to promote dialogue and create awareness. It helps dispel some of the ignorance. And also builds bridges in the community mate. They definitely have some downsides but when done by the right people are conducive to cohesion in society.

I like them if they aren't shouting and forcing people in to conversation. Just there for people to go to with queries.

Sorry I didn't see anyone speaking against him besides us. They let him sprout hate even to the fact that he had a problem that my woman is black. (Im white) no one spoke up either. They either agreed with him or they were scared and intimidated.

I just saw people laughing at his disgusting mouth. Only one guy spoke up and he was ex army.

I'd like to think even if you are of the same faith you wouldn't want idiots who discredit and preach hate about your religion. Why wouldn't they speak up?

They would have been sent there by some rogue mosque.

They'll get a pat on the back for making yet more enemies. it's a strange perversion.

Are you saying they were racist as well?

Can you add some detail please; when did this occur? What did these guys look like? Young, middle aged, mature? White, 'Asian', East-African - black?

I ask because - I think I can discredit them even from the limited info you've given.

Ones that facilitate radical preaching and hate crimes.
Do you have any evidence that these mosques have paid people to go out and do as you have speculated?

Also there are radical preachers in mosques. No denying. But which mosque in London facilitates hate crimes?
