Set-Piece - Shooting Specialist

I think anyone that genuinely believes we don't practice set pieces is reading way too much into some of the comments made by our players.

Do you genuinely believe at this level, to get to where we are, you can get away without being aware in a dead ball situation?

Defensively any given player can have a lapse (as Walker/Modric did yday), I think its more of a concentration issue.

With regards to free kicks, the best ones will stay behind after training to practice them (Beckham, Cristiano, Ronaldinho). If Benny really has been practicing after training then it showed, because hes the one whose come closest by hitting the bar yday!

I think we do practice them but I think we are just brick. You cannot polish a turd and at the moment all our players are utter turds at set pieces. Infact they all make turds look like shiny pieces of fudgein gold.

I'd like to see how many goals we've conceded from set-pieces this season, what percentage of our total goals conceded that comprises, and whether that is above or below the average percentage of set-piece goals conceded by Prem clubs. That should settle the debate. Any chance a boffin here could provide that info?

According to http://www.premiersoccerstats.com/TeamGoals.cfm?TEAMNAME=Tottenham H we've conceded 9 goals from set pieces this season and scored 6.

Emirates Marketing Project have conceded 4 (scored 13), ManU 10 (15), ARSEnal 10 (5), Chelsea 7 (8 ), Liverpool 7 (8 ). So out of the top 6, only ARSEnal and ourselves have conceded more goals from set pieces than we've scored.

According to this site we're 16th in the league for goals scored from dead balls. I can't find an equivalent table for goals conceded though...

Wow, I didn't expect someone to come up with the information so quickly. Thanks a ton, mate!

It's a shame you couldn't find a table for goals conceded from set pieces compared to total goals conceded, but never mind. One could calculate it, team by team, but it would take too long. In lieu of that, it's startlingly obvious that a)our defensive organization at set-pieces leaves a lot to be desired, and b)with the supposed dead-ball specialists in our team, we are massively underperforming when it comes to goals scored from set-pieces. If we want to catch up with United and City, we'll have to match their level of organization. Hell, if we want to pull away from Arsenal, we have to start taking advantage of set-pieces, because they're equally as bad, apparently. But that's no excuse for us to be.

Interestingly, it seems Aston Villa are rock bottom of the 'goals scored from set-pieces' table. And this from a team managed by Alex McLeish, whose Birmingham side were a blue and white Stoke for the most part. Hmm...

Villa really are having a shocker with set pieces this season...

Twitter / @OptaJoe: 12/11 - Emirates Marketing Project have scored the most goals from corners (12), while Aston Villa have conceded the most via this route (11). Predictable.

Certainly tallies with our wayward heading on Sunday...

Twitter / @OptaJoe: 6 - Tottenham Hotspur have mustered fewer headers on target than any other Premier League team this season. Underused.

A stark contrast to Stoke and ManU...

Twitter / @OptaJoe: 10 - Stoke have scored 10 headed goals this season, only Man Utd (12) and Norwich (14) have more. Traditional.

Perhaps someone should collect this info together and send it to the club, because if they already have it, they don't seem to be doing much about it.

After seeing him at Southampton I thought we had bought one in Gareth Bale, even moreso after his goal v Arsenal in his early Spurs career.

We soon knocked that out of him!

What galls me is that our freekicks just go over the bar every time

Unless we roll it 2 yards to the side and smack it into the wall

It doesn't even make the keeper work, you may as well just give it straight to the keeper

We would do much better to keep the ball in play by any means, either get it in the old pinball/mixer, or float it in, or even if we rolled it back to our keeper ffs!

Anything except just kick it into row G and look baffled

We nearly paid for it for it tonight. They hit the bar and had one cleared off the line. How can we be so bad at both ends??? It's getting ridiculous now.

Arsenal have improved massively in this area (defensively anyway).
Head to head against us, they looked for more dangerous on corners/set-pieces and defended our corners with ease.
They also scored from a corner against Milan in mid-week.

IMO, we are currently by far the worst in the PL defending set-pieces and close to bottom for our offensive set-pieces.

When Harry does go I wouldn't be sad to see Ferdinand Sherwood and Allen clear off too. They've failed to impress in my opinion during their time on the coaching staff at the club. They can take the entire medical staff as well.

Even Tony Parks has a bit to answer for, I reckon Brad probably does what he does with little input from him.

Jordan's good to have around just for a hatchet man on the bench.

Kaboul- free kicks

How many more times does he have to blast the ball 10 yards over the bar before Redknapp bans him from set pieces??? ](*,)](*,)](*,)
