Riyad Mahrez

I would just like to say that I think this is definitely one of the more interesting and intelligent discussions I have read in the transfer rumours forum in quite a while

I don't think Townsend is a "bad" player. He is just one who isn't really suited to the way that we play. I think he could do a good job for a team for a team such as Sunderland, WBA, Saudi Sportswashing Machine or even Leicester, who like to get crosses in and/or like to play on the break.

Yeah I agree with this. Poch has no use for his attributes. But his attributes will come handy when attacking against us LOL.

That might have been the point you were making. What you actually said was that there was "no skill required" with those known players. It's a somewhat frequently voiced opinion that continues to baffle me.

Mahrez has undoubtedly been a great signing for Leicester and their scouts should be proud. But it was also a signing for a club in a very different situation to where top clubs find themselves. Comparable to Schneiderlin before him going to a small club in a lower league and gradually progressing with that club as the club and player enjoys success provides a great learning curve for the player. A Mahrez or Schneiderlin signing for a top 6 PL club could easily have been sent back abroad after a year or two deemed a flop despite what is in hindsight obvious talent and potential.

Wasn't Paul Pogba released/sold by Manu some years back? Good example of this IMO.

nah he was out of contract / didn't want to sign another as he thought he was ready. Man U knew he was good but just didn't trust him in the 1st team yet.

Not quite. Man Utd knew how good he was. However the player wanted a very large contract to stay at the club. Pogba's agent was demanding money that was on a par with many of Man Utd's regular first team players.

Ferguson felt that paying a youth player this was the wrong thing to do and they eventually let him leave. From what I understand Ferguson and Man Utd always knew that Pogba would become a great player, but felt that giving a large contract to a young player coming through the youth system would set the wrong precedent and his contract should instead be altered upwards regularly as he got more first team experience.

I think i read that pogba couldn't believe cleverly was brought in when pogba was expected to crack into the first team. He wanted wages on par with others of his ability and a guarentee of getting first team football

Imagine he would have to take a pay cut as well - he's on about 100-120k a week there depending on the reports you read

Really would like him here. Assuming he would get his mojo back he provides that 'x' factor that we can lack....

If Poch thinks he can get his workrate to the desired level then its a no brainer for me....

That is the problem for me, he has skill ( there is no doubt) but he disappears a lot as well and i spoke to a Leicester fan up there who says he is a lazy bugger and plays when he wants. Pretty much like a lot of wingers over the years i guess, lot of money for someone who seems to be a highlights player ( again pretty much like most wingers).

One season does not a good player make.

Not convinced about this guy. He went totally missing last season whether through lack of ability or effort, neither of which is a good excuse.
