To be fair to the refs on this point, I do believe the law of the game does mean we actually have to be in a opponent’s penalty area in possession of the ball before they can award a penalty (I appreciate that this rule does not apply to the arse or pool)

You tend to actually need to have touches in the opponents box to be awarded penalties. The only way we could earn penalties is from long throws, corners or our hoofs towards the far side of the box when we get free kicks anywhere in the opposition half (or even in our own half near the half way line).
