Why does miliband want every new home to have solar? In winter it basically doesn't work in the uk. When we need power to heat homes.
Heat pumps i could understand.
Heat pumps have the same problem as solar: heat pumps work by essentially using a refrigerant to absorb inherent heat from the air and convert this into a gas through a heat exhanger that heats the water in the hot water system:
- in summer the air is warm so this process is efficient.
- in winter the air is cold so there is far less inherent warmth to convert to energy and the process is far less efficient.
So the comparative efficiency ratings of a heat pump boiler vs. gas boiler are hugely skewed as they use an average over the year but don't account for the fact that the only thing that impacts the efficiency of a gas boiler is wear and tear/servicing while a heat pump efficiency is at its worse during the period you want to use it the most.
That's why many people that have a heat pump say they haven't seen the reduction in energy bills promised (as the reduction in gas bill is offset by an increase in electricity usage as the pump, which is a huge-energy hungry piece of kit in itself, has to work overtime during winter months to generate enough heat).
Heat pump manufacturers and installers love them as they are hugely expensive, complicated and less reliable than gas boilers (due to the complexity) so they make a sh*t tonne of money via installation and maintenance work.
On flip side they do not emit like a gas boiler does. So they are greener from that perspective...
....so if you want to be greener and can:
- get hold of a sh** tonne of money
- have a well insulated modern house
- don't mind having a colder shower and being a bit less toasty during winter
- have space in your house or an outbuilding for a massive f***-off water cylinder
- have space outside your house and dont mind having a huge, ugly, noisy machine
- are prepared to suck up significant maintenance costs
Then heat pumps are probably for you.....
