Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

i just don't get the length of rope people are willing to give the Tories, that's what blows my mind. At what point (if ever), will enough be enough?

If it isn't the dodgy contracts to their millionaire mates, or breaking the own laws they set (which they usually ask for resignation etc) ... what will it take for you to finally think "you know what... maybe this lot don't have my best interests at heart"?

A higher level of taxation than is likely from the alternatives.

that’s why I’m not and never have been a fan of unrestricted capitalism, there needs to be some regulations and protections. A mixed capitalist/socialist system with environmental leanings which is socially liberal seems the right balance for me… and it’s very possible
What you are describing exists in many European countries already, but we need to go well beyond that IMO. The economy must be circular at every level and we are so far away from that I don't have much faith we'll get there on our own. We must work back from the boundaries set by the planet rather than pushing past them as all forms of capitalism demand, whether regulated or not.

it exists in some European countries, I’m not sure about many. If the whole world had a similar systems we would be in a much better place environmentally as well as socially and economically

Practical anarchism (now that's a term) is about having a few simple things in place, that prevent power accumulation, but which also don't build states/accumulate bureaucracies.

So UBI for example - the big anarchists' dream. One simple intervention (pay everyone £18k a year, half for children), and that's it. It abolishes the power of the corporations, as everyone has permanent wealth security; but it doesn't build the state as there's no decisions/discretion/administration. But all issues over poverty, automation, mental health etc. are solved.

I'm a Noam Chomsky or Rob Newman wing anarchist.

Noam Chomsky is not an anarchist. He almost certainly has some viewpoints that he shares with anarchists, as his political position is sophisticated so there is always going to be overlap. I don’t know enough about Rob Newman to comment. But what you are putting forward here is communism- which is ok if that’s your belief - but own it.

Noam has lost the plot actually. Thinks Trump is the solution to the Ukraine conflict.

And real innovation, leadership and vision! What happened to these things in politics?

They're competent yes but how are they innovative and showing vision, what new ideas are they bringing? Labour have no real vision for the country, no coherent policy as far as I can see. Only today Starmer wouldn't commit to reversing the NIC increase for example.

I think he's a lot more honourable than Boris (not hard) and would do a decent job but I don't find him inspiring or someone bringing new fresh ideas at all.

That's his main problem I agree. But not being "Boris" selling us a false vision is a good starting place. The vision comes later.

Seems like the Tories have done a good job of convincing voters that the left are the root of all that is bad in the country. Ed Miliband and then Corbyn's cabal didn't help to dispel those views.

Somtimes people or parties keep their cards close to their chest. Opposition parties can just provide good ideas that the ruling party rebrand and do themselves. It is productive for the nation if not the opposition. But in this case, is there just a lack of freshness and innovation? It is maybe there below the surface, hiding without oxygen or emphasis. When manifestos are published for the next election we'll have a better idea.

So in summary they may have some innovative ideas hidden away for their manifesto - are you Starmer in disguise?

11% inflation on the way; unemployment rising; cost of living crisis; millions heading towards fuel poverty; empty shelves in the supermarkets; massive queues at Dover; N Ireland in limbo; nurses having to rely on food banks…

Who would have guessed it could have ended up like this when we’ve got a narcissist in charge who has been sacked for lying from any job of note that he’s ever had?

Still, at least we’ve got that £350,000,000 from the side of the bus rolling in each week.

Most of these aren’t uniquely British problems though. Inflation, cost of living and fuel poverty are pretty much a global thing

Went to vote today in the locals, I was on the electorate but moved to a new area and hadn’t re-registered so wasn’t sure I could actually vote.

Gave my address and name and I wasn’t on the list, that’s on me for not doing any preparation/ research but I asked “Is there any way I can register online for the vote” and the lady goes “Ah yeah of course, that’s certainly possible”, so I double checked “So i’ll be able to vote tonight then?” “Unfortunately not it’s too late now there’s maybe one in 2025.....”, I literally said “I know that I’ll be able to some stage in the future thanks, meant more for tonight..”

Appreciate I was an idiot in rocking up without having done the necessities but how fudging dumb are people, like I was asking “Will I ever be able to vote again?!??!?”
