Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

So this is how Britain works now. A spiv Tory donor gives the party 500,000 quid and a few days later is elevated to the House of Lords as Lord Loadsacash of Epping. This twit now gets a say in the nation's laws. I thought this country was a democracy? The Tories under Johnson, aren't even pretending that it is anymore.

That looks like good news for Israel I hope it works out. It would be good to see what a mainly centrist and left controlled government with Israeli Arab participation can do.

What are your thoughts @dawaxman @JerusalemMan

No idea how a leader rotation works in practice... has it ever been done anywhere else?

I am an interested observer for now

Ireland just did something like this though the parties were not opposite ends of the ideological spectrum like this coalition.

They will never be in power again
These things go in cycles. Usually the Tories become so drunk with power, so unaccountable that the people eventually get sick of them and look for an alternative. Tbh it is the moment for populist, alt right parties and leaders around the world. Progressive left wing politics are not doing particularly well anywhere, even with Biden winning in America. Much of that, imho, is a reaction to globalisation and perceived threats to a unskilled or semi skilled workforces who are fighting back and with leaders offering simplistic solutions often steeped in nationalism, that don’t hold up to the slightest scrutiny.

They need to split again.

Let the Corbyn mentals go and join forces with the Greens and the joke candidates, allowing the serious politicians to form a worthy opposition.

The opposite needs to happen to oust the tories. A progressive alliance needs to be formed.

That plan is missing one vital part - votes.

The Overton window in this country has shifted since the left was last relevant (2 generations ago). That kind of politics is outside the bounds of what is acceptable to the general public.

The snapback is already underway I believe. Biden is one part, but a very significant one. If Trump had got in again I think America was done as far as free elections were concerned. One hopes it is not only a temporary respite but it may well be if dem's don't get voting rights sorted soon.
The unusual alliance in Israel to oust Bibi is another positive move. And I've heard of similar moves afoot in Hungary, a voting pact to try to oust Orban. Bolsanaro's grip on power has to be weakening considering the covid situation over there. And hey, maybe even the UK might stop its slide into illiberalism at some point too. One can hope these moves are part of a wider trend. I think it is.

As much as I hate to admit it but you are probably right because of the stupid voting system where only "winning" votes count.

I hope you're right because world politics is so depressing atm. That thousands have had to die before their populist alt right leaders are exposed as snake oil salesmen is an absolute tragedy.
