Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Who asked for Rule Britannia to be banned...? No one asked for it. BLM didn't. Is it seeped in imperialism with at best racially insensitive overtones, of course, but either way, at no point did anyone ask for it to be banned. We have bigger issues to focus on, health, education, justice system that disproportionately affects BAME people.

But instead of focusing on the issues being raised, we get daily coverage over the Proms. Mission complete from Boris and his merry men. Angry white people up in arms as if BLM was asking for the banning of Rule Britannia when it wasn't, but distracts from the underlying root causes of systemic racism that need fixing.

actually there was someone on Radio 4 the other morning arguing it should be dropped from the Proms. Don’t know who she was as I didn’t hear the intro to the piece.

The only problem with this is that there is sure to be someone even worse to replace him. It's the Tory party, you can bank on it. There will be a snide hateful little crypto fascist waiting in the wings.
 
So the French are still demanding free access to British waters for fishing.

I have still not heard what land mass in Europe British farmers are getting to farm. Why would any country give up their own natural resources.

The was and i said it at the beginning no point in negotiating. We should leave and be a free sovereign nation.

Voting in governments that free from the EU can take the country and make real changes.

Personally i want to see the railways nationalised. But if the environment is the biggest pull for the electorate then the government can subsidise green tech firms.

Lets trust in democracy and the people of this country. Time to stand up for freedom.

Aren't we demanding free access to equivalence/passporting for financial services? Isn't that the point of the whole back and forth, we need something from them, they need something from us etc.

Anyway, i don't see why this is hampering us, we hold all the cards and they need us more than we need them anyway right?

We are offering to continue the passporting for financial services because the city of London has that expertise.

Though interestingly the evil EU is not trying to threaten the city anymore. Might have something to do with a lot of the financial service industry saying it would not make much difference whether we are in the evil EU or not.

It’s a negotiation. If we wanted that and could leverage it. But we don’t want it and we don’t have a lot to leverage. Fishing waters is one of the things we do hold. Fishing is a tiny percentage of our GDP but seems highly symbolic. Far more important is being able to trade with the 500m consumers in the EU and protecting our financial services.

For the record i rarely eat seafood..

Im not sure i care for symbolism. But it is a natural resource and i think we should be getting French farmland in return.

The financial services is a non starter because only a tiny amount will leave some of which would have left anyway. In a roundup of the papers on the bbc back in December even the FT said some of the banks had quietly dropped their pledge to leave.

I remember because i spat my tea out and some went over our chaise lounge which erked her indoors.

Markel is cheap as it is, and an amazing fish. Can marinade in Asian flavors, and grill it skin side up. The crispy skin is delicious. Making me hungry. Doesn't the oil from mackerel do special things for your libido?

We did go to cote last monday and i had the crab for starter. Not big on seafood though.

That's because (as everyone with any sense could tell) it was all bluster to try and avoid the short term inconvenience of Brexit. Now it's certain to happen they've gone quiet.
 
Brexit is proving to be one big inconvenience.

I suppose the concern for things like financial services is if the EU wish to update their regulations in the future so more revenue from financial services is retained in the EU, what could we do to counteract? The EU financial service regulator was based in London. The UK drove the global standards for finance. While we will still be a financial hub, will it stay that way? Or will London become more like Zurich? A place with old traditional banks but not on the cutting edge. Superceeded by places that are in the core. New York has probably already overtaken London as the leader in global finance post-Brexit. How does London assert itself as a global leader from the periphery?

The Torys only real answer to this question isn't particularly fresh. It's their same old mantra, deregulate and lower taxes. Which indeed can attract businesses. The EU of course understands this. So as part of their negotiation, they want to ensure the UK won't be undercutting and undermining businesses in EU nations. That is the EUs job - to protect nations within it. So the UK negotiating team don't know or won't say what kinds of plans they have to deregulate or lower taxes, and don't want to sign up to anything regarding this with the EU. The EU repost: if you wish to trade with our 500m freely, we need contractual assurances you won't undercut us.

It was all predictable. At least two of the Brexit myths has been busted - that Brexit would be easy. That negotiations would be equal and simple for the UK. These things are never simple. Meanwhile the UK civil service is not really focused on day to day work, thousands of civil servants have spent time planning lorry parks, drawing up crazy plans. And for what? Something that offers the UK so little in return.
