Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Yeah but it all leads to speculation and without proof potentially labeling a potentially innocent cop racist is harsh also.

I don't disagree with that, it's all too easy to jump to conclusions without having all the facts. But the police should be able to explain why they took the action they did. Not necessarily publicly but to Dawn Butler and the driver.

I hope they make it across safely. If their claim for asylum is legitimate I hope they end up being valuable contributors to our wonderful society. Amen.
I'll give you a clue; it's not.

They're not leaving a country that is a threat to them, they're leaving France. Their cars are fudging terrible and the countryside is full of peasants but they're safe enough.

They don't have to be leaving a country that is a threat to them immediately before they come to the UK. They don't have to claim asylum in the first (or second...) safe country they reach. Coming via France doesn't of itself make their claim non-legitimate.

They want to claim asylum in the UK. They are allowed to.
I don't think they should be.

I'm perfectly happy for the UK to have a robust asylum system for anyone who needs to come here from somewhere they're in danger.

What isn't acceptable is taking every other country's cast offs like this. They're safe in France, there's no need to head here. It's like being offered a council house in Rotherham and insisting on one in Mayfair.

But they are allowed to pick the UK. Which is the key point. When you are desperate there is no law that says you have to take any option that is close to you. You can be selective.

Desperation and being selective are fairly exclusive don't you think?

If a person's situation is that bad that they qualify for asylum, then the difference between France and the UK should be in the margins.
