Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Funny that!

Also, how are these farmers protesting with a straight face, a lot of them voted for Brexit, and now they are protesting losing protections the EU gave them...

They should know more than any, about reaping what you sow.
What?

They are protesting something that has nothing to do with Brexit, but everything to do with a useless and incompetent government.

So even if we were still in the EU, the same issue would still ruin them.

The blame everything on Brexit, is getting boring now.

And it's why the country will never be fixed, because far too people are blaming the wrong thing.

Of the EU was so great, then why is Germany collapsing?

The economy isn’t doing too well. It seems like we are going to suffer a bit before we can rebuild.

Those supporting Brexit were supposedly fine with reduced economic activity and less money. Now less so!

All sane predictions saw our economy with less GDP and less growth, which of course means less tax revenue and this has come to fruition. What did you expect @scaramanga This is the reality you espoused and said you wanted. Mind you you also argued fervently that we’d be trading with non-EU nations and this was where all the growth was. What happened to that?
But the problems in the UK have nothing to do with Brexit.

Everything to do with, COVID, war in Ukraine, corrupt energy market, corrupt and broken housing market, investor greed etc etc.

I mean, if the EU was great, then why is Germany collapsing?

Are you going to blame that on Brexit too?

One of the best thing that ever happened was is leaving the EU.

We just need better than blithering idiots in charge.

If they are part time and sporadic why not use self employed people? Effectively the same as zero hours but with less rights?
We're not shopping at that end of the job market - these are fairly low skilled roles and not specialised. Not the kind of thing people contract into.

I bet the Germans wish they'd never left the EU - look how it fudged their economy too

Oh, hold on.....

Maybe you should consider it. Provided it’s the right side HMRC. Part time, no desk for example. If you show the people how to do tax returns and claim back expenses they’ll like it even more.

Oh, hold on.....

You know how statisticians go on about a correlation not allowing you to infer causation…wonder why they do that?

We could find any economy that’s not done well and say: ah you see it wasn’t Brexit at all! Never mind the micro economic realities.

Just have to look at the finance jobs and the loss of those transactions to see we have lost some economic activity. Pre-brexit you were fine with this. It was all a price worth paying and besides, you said, it’s all about trade with Asian now! Fear not you said. Now you’re paying higher taxes you’re not so sure it was all worthwhile?

Opening salvo - love it! Top tip for those that believe poverty is a very targeted problem in the UK that requires very targeted solutions - "you shouldn't ever ever evaluate poverty - you should leave it to the likes of us, that think that tonnes of money and resources need to be thrown at it.

And the thing for me is this mentality is kind of fine for commentators but what really concerns me is that this new government's starting point is actually the same. Their mantra is "everything is broken".

Very different to the last Labour government under Blair where they did actually inherit many of the same issues (the UK had just come out of a recession, geopolitical issues such as Northern Ireland and the balkans existed) but their initial output was basically positivity about Britain and the future: some of it was cringe (remember "cool Britannia"?) but the problem is when you tell everyone "everything is a s***show", people don't know where to begin.

What we are seeing currently is a complete loss of external and internal business confidence in the UK. If you're thinking about where to base your new European operations and the UK government is telling everyone that will listen that everything is s*** and it will take ages to fix?

We are seeing a total lack of leadership (where the f*** is Starmer half the time BTW?) and strategy.

Everything is s*** doesn't allow prioritisation. So they've decided to save a few quid "because everything ie s*** and we need the money" by decommissioning a load of older military hardware early. This is at a time when figures like Donald Tusk are saying we've never been closer to WW3.

My 'opening salvo' was in response to yet another of Scara's patronising 'life tip comments'. You'll see soon enough what the patterns are mate...you've thus extrapolated what you wanted to from my post.

The irony of a signing a petition for a new General election after parroting on about those who wouldn't accept the Brexit result.

As the Doors said...People are strange
Waste of time, they're all as bad as each other. Starmer only got in by default, early days for him and his cabinet but not impressed so far.

Didn't someone post a graph showing financial jobs going up a few pages ago...

How can concordat jobs be going down, if there is more of them?

I have 3 kids in primary school. There's absolutely nothing wrong with our education.
Have taught for 30 years, in both state and independent sectors, and have started doing some inspection work over the last year or so.

There is a lot of work to do in our schools: in many, behaviour is beyond poor, and learning is therefore severely affected; there is a mental health crisis among young people which is having a huge impact; there is a huge recruitment and retention crisis in teaching; and many school buildings are not fit for purpose.

If you’re children are in a state school, it sounds as if you have been extremely lucky. Your experience is certainly not mirrored in that of millions of families.

You will know alot better than me, so really intrigued to ask, is social media a part in the mental health crisis? For my money seeing my sons age absolutely yes.

It’s the major underlying issue; concentration levels have been seriously affected and it’s made it very difficult for young people to switch off. Parents’ own interaction with their devices is also leading to plenty of poor parenting (‘Stick them on the tablet and I can get on my device’). There’s increasingly a lack of boundaries at home too for many young people, and that spills into the classroom. Services are also overwhelmed and that’s having a huge impact too.
