Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

In fairness to PEH (and I've been a big critic) he isn't a DM, he doesn't have the awareness or the discipline required for the role. He's much better pushed forward closing down and pressuring the opposition.

Yeh look I agree, he was better internationally on the limited times I have seen him in that role.

One of the things I was looking forward to with Conte, was his mantra that you win a game in the last 30 minutes, like he did against us in the cup when he started Hazard the bench, and brought him on to win. I wouldnt be against PEH starting as CAM and Richarlison LF for example, then bringing on Maddison and Son to win a game.
It's an interesting idea; making sure you genuinely make a change at 65 mins to win the match i.e. bring on some real talent with half an hour against a tiring team. Sometimes it feels like we just throw on someone else towards the end, in a vague hope the extra body will gel. But nearly always a worse player than the starter.

Early Poch also tried to win the game in the final 15 minutes, but with the starting players and superior fitness/pressing (through exhausting training). Although it worked for a while, it ultimately ended in burn out for the players after a couple of seasons.

Without passing any judgement on the merit of the idea, there's absolutely no way Ange would ever consider playing to win the game in the last X minutes.

Eddie Jones started it in rugby a long time ago. His mantra was - we dont have subs, we have finishers. But rugby is much higher scoring. In football you can lose the game in the first 10 minutes if you aren't competitive from the off

You've missed out the other part of his mantra that is required to make that work:

Lock the game down for the first 60mins and (try to) keep it at 0-0

There was something online a year or two ago raving about one of those modern specialist coaches that was focused on substitutes. He was saying that the current use of subs was all wrong and that they rarely make an impact, mostly because a little jog up and down the touchline was tinkle poor preparation to join in a full speed match. He had subs off to the side doing really intense stuff and getting them prepared and said you could see an improvement once they came on compared to before. It was an article though with no video clips so it's hard to say where they warmed up or found the space to do intense running and ball work etc. but thought it was interesting at the time.

It's very difficult to come on and reach the physical level if all you've done is jog along the touch line, in international rugby they use exercise bikes to get heart, legs and lungs pumping.

Could put them in the American football changing rooms, think the is meant to be a gym in there.
