Paul Mitchell - Head of Recruitment and Analysis

Its an interesting article, also mentions Ian Broomfield leaving for a 2nd time!

My big question though is, why has only 1 picture ever been taken of Paul Mitchell?

I don't think he ever actually came back in an official capacity from QPR. He was just one of Levy's miscellaneous consultants, along with Pleat, Rosenthal and co.

the whole area of our scouting and player identification dept seems somewhat murky to me.

I'm sure the statisticians and computer experts will prove me wrong but I believe the best way to find a player is to watch them play for a period of time and if possible try to find out something about their personality and behaviour. To mine mind any signing is a gamble as it's not just about ability or previous form, so many things can go wrong for a player and the club.

The point of stats analysis is to find players that are worth having a look at. It's not like that part has been scrapped. It's not an entirely new concept, just a bit more refined than going to look at whoever is the top scorer in certain leagues.

Then why does that piece specifically refer to his contract ending and not being renewed?

No substance and little more than supposition, but he's a reasonable name to be linked again.

interesting profile on wikipedia:

Director of football at Roma

  • With the funds, Sabatini managed to purchase three additional centerbacks in the summer of 2014, and was able to snatch Juventus's main target in the transfer window, Juan Iturbe, from Verona. For his efforts the season prior, Sabatini was awarded the best director of football award for the 2013–14 Serie A season. He was hitherto normally known for signing short term deals, but for the first time he agreed upon a three-year extension with Roma in 2014.
feels like we have a special relationship with roma now

Tottenham Hotspur are set to appoint former scout Steve Hitchen as their head of recruitment, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Spurs have been searching for someone to fill the role for several months since Paul Mitchell, who is working his notice at the club, opted to leave White Hart Lane.

Chairman Daniel Levy has been looking to revamp the club's scouting network and is targeting Hitchen, who worked as a scout at White Hart Lane between 2005 and 2010.

During that time, he was credited with spotting Luka Modric and pushing for the club to sign the Croatia star.

Hitchen left Tottenham for Liverpool in 2011 to link up with Damien Comolli and helped the Reds sign Luis Suarez from Ajax.

His most recent job was as joint director of recruitment at Derby, but he departed from the Championship club soon after Nigel Pearson was sacked in October.

In case anyone is wondering if this Hitchen guy is any good:

"Redknapp - who was manager of Spurs - said: "Steve was excellent, an English boy who lives in France. He was very, very good and we liked him a lot."
