*** OMT Tottenham vs Arsenal ***

in fairness i think if you swapped managers around for a couple of seasons with the same players i dont think we would be sitting here saying we wouldn't take a single Arsenal player in our XI...

True but there are several players he would not touch in their side.

There is the whole 'arms in an unnatural position' scenario, and his were up and slightly out. There's a reason why many defenders stick their hands behind their backs when defending. Anyway, we didn't need that penalty to comfortable beat those Nomadic Scum.
Which is about the only unnatural position you can have your arms. In addition to that, there is no such thing as unnatural position in the rules. It's if it's intentional or not.

Correct about the intention part but the unnatural position of the arms was something that referees were asked consider when assessing a handball by the International Football Association Board. It is now part of the referees interpretation of the rule.

It may be unnatural but it minimizes the area of arm available for a deliberate hand ball.

And to think a year ago, and even early this season, we were saying Poch has no Plan B. Now we seem to have Plans A-D and that's before a single sub has been made.

But it shows the kind of players we have and the one we need

People still criticise dier saying his is an accident waiting to happen but he is the lynchpin of that flex ility as he joins defence and attack with his role and does it better than I think any English player could (sure there is a German player out there who could)

It's why we need players now who a truly flexible style wise and mentality too

Someone suggested Antonio recently and he is exactly the type of flexible player we should buy

Question - If a defender (not the keeper) stands on the goal line while defending a free kick, and spreads his arms out wide above his head as if he's doing a star jump, but closes his eyes (so that he doesn't know where the ball is and therefore cannot "intend" to touch it), and the kicked ball happens to hit his outstretched arm, which prevents the ball from entering the goal, is that an intentional handball under the rules?

Yes it's still intentional, just because someone's eyes are closed doesn't remove intent from their actions.

Even if the ball is kicked into the stationary arm, rather than the arm moving to the ball? Hence the natural/unnatural arm positioning line of enquiry, right?

I hope you're right because we could imaginatively stack our team on the goal line for dangerous free kicks and the oppo would never score.

If you have your arm outstretched you are creating more potential for ball obstruction which could now be interpreted as intent given the guidelines of the IFAB.

it was a foul on kane, a clear kick on the ankle

I don't think the sanchez one should have been a penalty though, it shouldn't ever be a penalty when the ball is kicked at you in such proximity
Not when your arm is raised like his was.

The only reason to stand like that, would be to hope that a goalbound shot was stopped = intentional.

yeah, but the word deliberate is still in there

no, it's not

the rule isn't based on intent, it's based on the hand deliberatly being used to intercept the flight of the ball

if they worded the law to something like "moved arm with intent to impede the ball" then yes it would be a foul

the laws of the game are probably the most studied text in human history, it's taken over a hundred years to distill this law to its current wording

Thank you Spurs for giving me a great feel-good factor all weekend. I couldn't be more proud of you. Simply brilliant performance. Poch got the big calls right and the players delivered. We could have had a hatful but for some wasteful finishing and some unbelievable saves by Cech. Well done everyone.
