OMT *** Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool ***

Being dominated here. Mane's pace is proving magnificently useful for sides that like to press, since even a simple out ball from deep sends the defense pedalling back some 30-40 yards, and on the attack any ball into his feet leads to the defense bring unable to close him down in time.

We haven't had a player with the dual attributes of pace and close control like that in a long time.
That is why I was hoping we buy him.
However, he should have been sent off. Ref was lenient as he let averts off the penalty, since he wasn't looking at the ball from corner.

It was a clear dive. At best the player mistakenly kicked his own foot but there was no reason for the sideways movement of his foot other than cheating.
Just leave it ffs. It's given! It's over. Nothing to do about it! It was a penalty. Either way it's nothing that is gonna change it.

Dembele is the big miss in midfield. In games where there isnt much space or time on the ball, like today, he'd be ideal.

Ref hasn't been that bad. His worst decision was not giving a pen against Verts. Poch needs to light a fire under them.

Agree that about Dembele. It why I think its critical we get some cover in for him

I was Eriksen I'd be thinking about a less physical league

Eriksen needs a midfield able to pass and move. Spurs do too. We're not joined up today. Long balls. Scrappy play in the face of pools pressure. We need Dembele or Wanyama getting more confidence to play out and accurate passes to work the ball around pools physical closing.

Well, we're unlikely to change anything at the break (nobody on the bench we could change it up with, anyway), but we've been second best to 'Pool, arguments about the penalty aside. Vorm's been great, and he's saved us from conceding more.

The problem lies both up front and in midfield - Wanyama tracks runners well when they enter his zone (ahead of Toby and Jan), but he also sticks to his zone a lot when the ball's moving around him, and I'm not sure he should be doing that if we're looking to gain possession. Alli's been peripheral, and the result has been an overload in the middle with them pressing us with ease. When we do get the ball and send it upfield, Kane couldn't hold it up at all, so it came straight back. Janssen did a bit better in that regard (probably because of the extra space afforded to him by dint of us switching to two men up front), but the lack of pace up front is hurting us considerably when compared with Liverpool, who spent big on Mane and as a result have pace up front to ally with the pressing of Lallana, Firmimno, Coutinho et al., which in turn forces our defense to stay back and creates tons of space for them to exploit.

Us and Liverpool are trying the same tactics, in the same league. Our match ups are thus always instructive as to what we do well, and what we could do better. At the moment, we have a lot of pointers to chew on.

I agree. Dembele links defence/attack (Mason did a similar job if not as effectively. When we play Dier + Wanayama we lack transition between defensive possession and attacking.

We also lack sufficient like for like players on the bench. Walker comes off and our shape is all over the place.

Need another player to replace Dembele when he is out

Wanyama should just be backup/rotation with dier

Alli maybe can add quality in centre mid in the second half. Eriksen is so poor and has been for a while. I'd drop him for a few games

Defence are not able to pass into midfield so they are going long and we aren't winning the second balls.

Need to be braver in the second half.

Cant have too many complaints about all that. They have deserved to be ahead for me

I knows its only HT, but I didnt expect us to win today, thought this might be a 2-2 draw, but what has surprised me is how much quicker and better than us they have been, they seem to winning everything in the tackle and moving upfield twice as quick as us.
Very similar to last seasons home game where they bossed us for 30 mins before tiring.

Today they seem well up for it, and right now I dont see us breaking them down, we just dont seem at the races, whether we need another change maybe Son for Eriksen or Alli I dont know
It was clear to me from our first two games that we were nor ready.. The win over crystal palace didn't convince me that we were ready for a high energy klopp team

We need to change our play a bit. Liverpool are pressing high. We then need to play past their pressing instead of trying to be clever and play our way out. We have 2 really strong guys up front. Play it up to them so they can lay it off. That way we get rid of 6 Liverpool players.

Before passing and moving on let's try standing ground and keeping possession

unlikely the human brain can react that fast. It looked natural enough to me, was just bad luck. Dont really blame Lamela either. It's not like those stupid lungeing tackles u see some defenders make in the box when the opposition player is running AWAY from goal.
If the player's already looking to go over - which he clearly was - then it's easy.

Hopefully their game in midweek will take it out if them as the game wears on. COYS lets have a big second half.
