***OMT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs KAA Gent - 2nd Leg***

If the players aren't ready for some bounce back against Stoke we might as well end the season now...

They've had a training camp in Dubai, so there's some hope still. Or maybe it's just us that look sluggish after mid season breaks like that.

I would much rather he broke his habit of starting a central midfield with close to zero ability to up our passing tempo.

Start the same midfield this weekend and most likely Stoke will have a central midfield capable of higher tempo passing than our midfield. fudging Stoke!

Would you start Wanyama and Winks?

I thought his selection was spot on, as the game progressed (although I had differing views at the start) - so much so that I was actually dismayed when Winks came on and we lost all control.
After putting Son on we did as well as can be expected with ten men. Wanyama and Dembele asked
Allowed Walker and Vertonghen to be attacking threats as full backs despite us playing with ten men. That worked well. For once I was happy to see Winks start on the bench.

First half I'm less convinced. Again our chances came primarily by us bypassing our central midfield and pretending like it didn't exist when we had the ball. And it's another game in a long line of games with a similar pattern.

That game was on one player Dele, end of.

Blaming the ref the worst kind head in the sand stupidity.

It took multiple replays and several minutes for the tv to pick out that it wasn't a corner, what chance has the ref.

Dele tried to buy a free-kick and the ref doesn't buy it. He then tried to maim a player. That's a red card all day fudging long.

We insist on giving the opposition the chance to buy free kicks.

Except for dier who I thought was poor I think the rest of the team can hold their heads high.
Dele needs bitch slapped.

So, wait, you wanted us to have a midfield with some passing tempo, but simultaneously didn't want Winks to start? Who would give us that tempo, then?

For me, Dembele was a consistent controller throughout both halves - Winks came on and we immediately went down several levels.

Yes. They won. That is not noteworthy to me - firstly, because they're an opposing side and I couldn't care less what they do, and secondly, because even if I were magnanimous enough to find opposing teams succeeding against noteworthy, they did nothing worth remembering that couldn't also have been done by Telford United or some Vanarama League team with a helpfully corrupt ref on their side. Panic, fall over a lot, steam into our lads, slip a brown envelope under the ref's door at half-time, fall over a lot, steam into our lads, panic, fall over a lot...etcetera, etcetera.

Make no mistake, I want us to do that too. I want us to be as c*ntish as possible if it's what wins titles. We are in 100% agreement on this - I'm not one for nobility and being the bigger man when the world is evidently out to f*ck us, and I'd rather we paid everyone back in the same coin if it meant winning.

This is not to excuse the fact that we lost to Gent. We lost, it is a failure, and in an ideal world the ref could send off all 80,000 Spurs fans, ten of the players and Poch and we'd still whallop c*nts like these with just Toby on the field. But...this is only to point out that they did literally nothing noteworthy for me to go 'you know what? I'll note that as something worth remembering.'

A) That's an exaggeration, and B) even allowing for the essential truth of that statement, I made it clear that we were still letting ourselves down throughout the game. Be it via a lot of individual errors or Kane being outdone by a Belgian league defender.

Fair enough.

For me, it's very simple. They've come away to a much superior team. And they've gotten through the tie.

Im struggling to remember the last time we really did something similar? Get through a European tie where we were massive underdogs? Get a great result away at a top level team?

I couldn't care less what we do to get those results as long as we do them.

Nobody is saying this will go down in Europe league history. But it seems it will go down in Gent history and rightly so. It's noteworthy because of their game management against a superior team. I hope for the day we can do similar.

Would you start Wanyama and Winks?
Either that or Winks and Dembele. Or Winks and Dier. Or Alli and Eriksen box to box with Wanyama or Dier holding as a lone DM.

Just about anything that gets more creativity and passing tempo into our central midfield would make me quite happy at this point.

However well we played, I'm confident we'd have got the job done at WHL. The evidence is becoming more damning all the time regarding Wembley.

I'm not looking forward to Premier League games there next year.

To say the game was lost because of Alli is silly imo; it's almost like people have forgotten we were 1-1 when Dele was on the pitch; who is to say we wouldn't have continued being wasteful up front and suicidal at the back with 11 men?

Autocorrect... "start" was supposed to be "stay". I really wanted Winks to start. But after Son came on on the second half I was quite ok with Winks not coming on. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Out of Europe, won't beat Stoke as we'll be too tired.

Now to get to the semis of the FA Cup so we can fail to win at Wembley again.

Unbeaten in our last 2 games at Wembley.

Of course he has had horrible games. Dude is out of match practice and his morale is low. That said Dier has been much more poor given the number of games. Lets see what happens in the remaining games. Pochettino is far too loyal to certain players.

Why would he play a guy with low morale and is not match fit then?

When will Poch learn that he needs to stop us just chucking in crosses?

This will really brighten your mood. Article about some guy from Opta debunking the myths that goals don't come from crosses.

Ah. Okay, although I disagree - I felt Dembele controlled the game about as well as a better passer (such as Winks) would have done.
