OMT - Tottenham Hotspur vs Internazionale

Once again, it’s up to the club to manage who deserves a pay increase and who doesn’t. Just because one player gets a pay increase doesn’t mean you have to do it for the entire squad. If we’re going to continually use this argument then we’ll never sign players for fear of upsetting anyone who earns slightly less, or a lot less.

You do have to give them more if you want them to be happy, or if you don't want them any reason for their agent to kick up a fuss in the next transfer window / contract negotiation time. Because it will happen. And the reason it doesn't happen often is because most clubs get it. Every club has a structure. City right now easily have the money to give Sterling 220k a week like his agent is demanding, but they don't want to do it. Not because they can't, but because they view him at a certain level in their scale and he views himself otherwise.

To take it the opposite way, we offered Trippier a big pay increase after we sold Walker. Not because he had done anything amazing to deserve it beyond being a good back up, but because we knew he was going to be playing more in that coming season. It was proactive, and it reflected his appropriate worth in the squad. I'm sure he wouldn't have kicked up a fuss and was simply relishing his chance to play more, but we appropriately reflected his worth.

What we absolutely can't do though, is offer someone who would be our 5th or 6th most important player the highest wages.

If it makes you feel better, Pool were coasting and PSG were nowhere... then Salah gave the ball away and PSG sprinted right down the middle and scored without a challenge for 2-2

Who is saying we have to do that? We gave Kane a big pay rise in the summer, well deserved after 4 seasons of being the best striker in the league (stats wise). He is the highest paid player because he is our best player. If the club were scared of hurting everyone else's feelings then they wouldn't get very far and they wouldn't have given Kane a big wage increase.

Interesting post though a couple points I would strongly debate:
- "But long term, are those things going to help us above City and United?"
- "I'm waiting for the point where we operate on a closer financial footing to our rivals"

I dont think we're ever expecting to be consistently above the two Manchester clubs...and really our 'rivals' are Liverpool, Arse and to some extent Cheatski (given that they seem to being less bankrolled by the Russian).

I believe Levy's aim is 4th every season, which isnt a bad aim if you accept that Man U and Man C are far far richer. However I worry that he's been lulled into a false sense of security as a result of Poch's achievements. Our transfer activity - both incomings and outgoings - this summer was awful and exacerbated by the world cup...but we knew about the world cup and the number of our player which would be involved.

I completely think Levy wants us competing with the Manchesters. It won't happen overnight and takes a lot of smart thought and long term planning, but I think he wants us there.

This idea that Levy just wants 4th is nonsense and has no basis. I saw a Tweet tonight that said he'd rather come 4th on 50M profit then 2nd on 20M profit. Takes like this just show such a fundamental ignorance of the business of football and it really shows those people up.

I think his overall goal is to get our infrastructure to a point where we are able to consistently compete with bigger clubs, but I think we will sell the club to owners that have a better skill set to manage one of the biggest projects. Levy and ENIC create value out of undercooked potential. And it's a great skill set to have, and is perfect for our needs right now. But, I would say that when we have the infrastructure of a bigger club, we may need someone at the head of the table who has the skillset to run a best in class commercial operation, has the network with all the super agents, and a financial strategy that means we speculate to accumulate a little more. Right now we don't do that and I think it is right, given where we are at and what we need to build towards. But ultimately we will need to spend more when we have the infrastructure to support it. It's just a journey of getting there and I trust Levy as the best man to get us to that point.

Inevitable, they fold like a cheap suit if you actually kick the ball toward their goal.

What are you saying? I completely agree with this point. Kane is the best player, so earns the most money. Where is the issue here?

That's the precise reason it works. Kane is the highest paid player so if he gets a rise, other players aren't going to be claiming that deserve similar. That's exactly how it will work. Although what I would say, is that when it comes to renewing other players, they will now be demanding something in line with Kane's scale, if not parity. So the ceiling becomes 200k per week for example, and that means Eriksen deserves between 150-175. What Levy has to be careful with is not putting us on a level that we can't sustain with our current infrastructure.

Hopefully Salah’s poor form districts a little bit from our wobble.

One season wonder?

Poch can't come out and openly say this but his team selections in the FA Cup semi final against Utd for example didn't suggest that game was his biggest priority. Vorm instead of Lloris? I can't imagine Mourinho not starting De Gea in a semi final of any competition. I think it's more than likely Poch's remit to keep the club in the top 4 as it's important for the financial wellbeing of the club and it's vital in order to attract a lucrative sponsor for the new stadium.

They do
Their actually quite spineless

I was super impressed by them at the weekend but John Giles was on today saying “yeah they looked real good but look at the goal they gave Spurs. Lamela had way too much time. Liverpool will still give goals away and they aren’t properly organized on set pieces.”

He may have had a point.

I think it’s much more likely that he wants every member of the squad to feel part of something, and wants to establish the mentality that we needed to be consistent across a season, not a one off game, in order to be judged successful.

And I think everything that Levy has done since Poch came in from a financial perspective is so that we aren’t reliant on CL money to do anything. Everything has been as much about controlling our own destiny as possible and not having any investment contingent on success, because you can’t guarantee a plan on finishing above 2 out of the top 6 every year.

Our CL finishes has been very much a nice to have an example of the peerless work Poch has done. But I don’t think 4th has been the goal. Besides, how does one plan for 4th but not to win the league? I thought the lack of signings was to show Levy had no ambition? He must be pretty certain we are still going to get 4th this year?

Not his usual self is he. We've lost games before and he's not been like that

Blood boiling wasn’t it. Knows how big a result that could be for many reasons.

If we’d have drawn and they asked him about them he prob would have straight batted it.

I don’t know why he didn’t just say they had a knock yesterday.

Yep. Have to worry a little bit about how things are behind closed doors when he’s ranting like that to hacks.

I’m actually quite comforted by this. And was more worried when Poch was hanging out the team to dry in public a little. Because that was different from his usual MO and suggests he saw something wasn’t quite right.

All this is, is Poch having the clear conviction in his decisions and defending the players on the pitch tonight. This is the best Poch, and what has made him successful. And leads me to believe we will be ok.
