OMT ** Tottenham Hotspur v Wolves ** 29 December 2024.

I think fans asking for a change of tactics and approach is why they are fans and not managers
I also think a team thag has issues defending is better at keeping the ball away from the defence

Well then he’s not going to be managing the team for much longer if he doesn’t change or at least tweak things slightly. Even Poch And Arry had a Plan B and they were also known for being stubborn and inflexible at times but Ange takes it to another level. Is there really nothing you feel he could do differently tactically?

And that may happen
I think there is always things a manager can ask pakyers to do but it doesn’t mean a player can or will execute it
Maybe that’s why they don’t change that much

Yeah, not watching this either. We might get a reaction in one of the two league games, but more likely we'll get utterly embarrassed. We'll then lose by two goals to Liverpool, making the second leg redundant.

If we lose to Wolves, and then by 2+ goals to Liverpool in the first leg of the semi-final, I think that will be the end for him.

Usually, I've no idea what to expect. Have an awful feeling about this one like many though. Maybe that's just my general feeling around Tottenham at the moment but the probable defensive line up is a worry.

One thing I will be interested to observe if we lose though. Against The Dippers, the crowd stayed right behind the team and Ange. If we lose to Wolves, will they do the same?

Think I'd go with:

Forster

Porro
Udogie
Gray
Bentancur (if Dragusin is out)

Bissouma
Sarr (if Dragusin is out. Otherwise Bentancur)
Maddison

Kulusevski
Solanke
Werner

Struggling who to put in CB. I think putting a kid in with Gray could be a disaster. Then I'm down to midfielders and Bentancur is the one with the best football brain (racial stereotypes aside).

Other Johnson for maddison and kulu Central I think that is as good a line up as we can expect tbh.

Funny how everyone have bad feelings about this one. Wolves are the kind of team that suits us: they have the worst defensive record in the league. We'll outscore them. Maybe it will be a tense affair but I'd be disappointed if we didn't come out on top against them. Forest were a team perfectly set up to beat us; Wolves aren't.

It still amazes me that the tactics are way down the list of root causes, compared to others like injuries, age etc.

Defending was always logical. You keep the ball away from your keeper / goal by have centre halves in front of them. You protect those centre halves by having guys on their outside called fullbacks and guys in front called midfielders. You protect those guys with more guys in front of them.

What is occurring to me is that when you try to do that but players are in different positions to where they are selected you should expect trouble. Just like you wouldn't expect a centre half to morph into a great winger, why would you expect a wide forward to think like a number 6 when he has had to come inside?

Ange is not selecting a team sheet with players out of position, except for Gray out of necessity, but when you look closely his players are spending a ton of time out of their natural positions within the 90 mins.

Is that taking it's toll? Will there be enough breakthroughs?

I always think back to how many managers have tried to teach Sonny defensive smarts. Every single one has failed. Will Ange fare better with a load of different players?

Not too sure this bodes as well as you might think. Last season when we met them at Molyneux in November, we were 2nd and they were 13th after 11 games and our goal difference was 15 better than theirs. When we entertained them in February, we were 4th and they were 11th with 24 played and our goal difference was 17 better than theirs. They still did the double over us....

I'd give the first loss a pass: we were still reeling from the Chelsea game that proved a big turning point in our season. It goes without saying that we don't have a great record against them, but if you don't feel confident when facing a team that - at least on paper - allows you to play to your strengths, you might as well give up on the whole season.

We're not doing great at the moment but we're not in complete freefall either. I don't have any feelings one way or another about Postecoglou but a) I think he managed the injury crisis better than he had last season and b) so far, his team always bounced back when give the chance.

I wouldn't say that's a fixture we can't lose, but I'm feeling more confident about this one than I did when we faced Forest.

I admire your semi-optimism :)
