20 years ago you would have been right, but the game has moved on and attacking teams tend to dominate the big leagues and European competitions. You need a balance, but full backs need to provide an outlet and be good going forward almost as important as being good on the other side of the ball, maybe even more important than being good defensively.

I disagree, more often than not, the Champions League has been won by a solid defensive unit.

Great post. Quite a few posters oversimplify things when we lose and say the forwards had an off day which may be true, but they can’t always create everything themselves, they need help in that department from the CM’s and the wingbacks.

And its not in detriment to defense to expect other to use the ball better when we have it.

Sess and Royal are both wasteful in attacking areas, thats zero to do with a balance of attack versus defense

Solid defensively yes, but not cautious, safety first football like Jose and other negative, dinosaurs used to play. All the teams that have won it in recent years; Real, Liverpool, Bayern, Chelsea, Barca are attack minded teams.

He was always a poor defender but he was excellent going forward. Sadly for us his attacking play went backwards too which made his position in the team untenable as he couldn’t fall back on being a good defender like Royal can for example.

Funny old game, Tripper was getting pelters from a few on here towards the end of his time here because he was not much good at defending ( according to some), now we have Royal who is good at defending but not much ( according to some) good going forward, guess what its his turn for getting stick . Supporters are really fickle at times.

We all want the team to win at the end of the day. When a player has a weakness or needs to be upgraded there’s nothing wrong in discussing that. Some people don’t rate players as high as others do, just you never had time for Danny Rose for example. I’m sure you can appreciate he had strengths even if you didn’t like him personally or thought he could be upgraded.

And it’s not like many (if any) people have said Royal is a bad player, just that his attacking play leaves a lot to be desired. Or that Trippier was a bad player, just poor defensively.
