*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace FC ***

I’d say they don’t reflect your view on the game
Is also add that we’re playing the old African Spurs wonky again with the defensive side
doherty does his fair share there too. I even heard someone say he was trying to score abs OG vs Fulham when he put the cross behind the goal after Sanchez missed the header

as I say there is a bias against him now IMO

Doherty to me had good involvements but didn't have a great game, that was my observation. He's shaky, his decision making wasn't always the right one and he was caught out a couple of times.

I think his biggest issue is the same as Davies, the alternate is simply a lot better and it shows.

It doesn’t show statistically though
And I do think Aurier has been our best right back by the way
Hell the only one in the league IMO who has been as good plays for West Ham

Yep, I get, but my observation is

- Palace bypassed him a couple of times (won't show it in stats)
- He got space because the Palace defenders were focused on Bale, several times he could have used it much more effectively offensively and didn't
- Couple of times that I can think of, he slowed things down

Again, not saying the guy had a stinker, but 100 times out of a 100 Aurier plays in front of him, and nothing I've seen (at his best) suggests anything will change.

Space?
I mean defensively his stats stack up
He also was successful with his crosses more than people saw... the guy got an assist.
I’m not saying we play him instead of Aurier but we need a balance. Aurier attacks more abs Davies doenst. Reggie does and Doherty doesn’t. Davies and Doherty can also play a limited CB role creating that 3. Aurier hasn’t but he is brilliant in the air

I get it mate, I do .. we need a squad, Davies, Doherty, fudge even Winks and Sissoko will have to play some games and they can do a part.

I hope his assist gives him some confidence, but he's played a lot of games this season (more than 20 starts) and it still hasn't quite clicked for him.

Played the same amount in the league as Aurier - 14 games

So the above are standard match stats
What you can see is Doherty made a lot of passes and helped us keep the ball
Reggies passing wasnt as accurate but it was more in the attacking areas

passing stats in more detail

Very solid defensive stats again

lastly the key offensive ones

Very solid is a bit of an overstatement mate. For passing, he had the lowest passes out of anyone in the backline - Dav passed more than he did. For defensive stats, Reggie blows him out of the water - 5 tackles, 5 interceptions and 2 clearances to Doherty's 1, 4 and 1 respectively - exactly double the numbers, without any fouls for Reggie versus two given away by Doherty. And the yellow card for Doherty as well.

Same thing attacking-wise - Reggie did a far better job, and @SteveAWOL 's map of actions shows the sheer number and variety of Reguilon's crosses and attacking actions versus basically nothing from Doherty into the box.

And, as I've mentioned, he got beaten to the ball about thrice in the game, left space in behind twice, got left for dead twice. None of that will show in the stats, but it will be evident in game.

Reggie is lightyears ahead of Doherty, and the comparison makes it even worse for Doc - the guy is supposed to be an experienced Premier League full- back, but is being left for dead both by Aurier this season and Reggie on the other flank, a raw kid fresh from La Liga.

Only one of our fullbacks as mediocre-to-poor as Doherty has been this season is Davies.

I'm giving him a chance next season because he had COVID and it might be tough settling in. But I'm done with him for this season, and Japhet should start every game Aurier's not fit for. If we're playing that wonky system again as you say, even better - Tanganga's a centre-back by training, he'd do a better job than Doherty at that, easy.

He had better passing stats than Toby and Toby played CB
And he was the only defender to make any key passes and he made 3.
I’d argue that his passing stats were good and better than you think

I agree they got in a few times on his side but they were actually offside I believe for the ones your thinking of.
I’d also add what I said vs Fulham is that he has no one covering his side hence why he gets doubled up on.
Unless sissoko plays (please no) we never have cover on out right

I’m all for digging out a player who has a bad game but today he didn’t have a bad game.

im waiting for the winks pile on soon too to hear how bad he was

Doherty was fine today, it just seems that ( once again) s ome fans have made up their minds about certain players and no matter how well they play they will TRY and call them out.
Maybe
I just find any kind of digging out of anyone after a 4 -1 win odd
People wanted to after we beat Burnley
People weren’t happy after we beat Fulham
It’s strange behaviour and part of the reason the club won’t get where it could. Fans need to back the team

I'd normally agree with you, we do like ourselves a spacegoat here.

I'd say, what I've seen is Jose is finding not only the attacking balance but a balance where we can rotate a couple of players without the performance falling off a cliff. But it is becoming clear where the weakest links in the chain are (painfully so)

Dier, Doherty, Winks, Sissoko, Davies are weakest part of the squad. Does it mean they can't have a good game? = no, they can and we need them to. But does it mean people will probably notice their errors more, forgive it less vs. other players? = sure

I look at today's game re Doherty (and Winks), did I think Doherty had a mare? = no. If I named my best 6 players in the match, is he (or Winks) on the list? = no. Others will probably be more critical, some 3 weeks ago said Bale was washed up ..

I have enjoyed most of our football for the last few weeks, even before the wins, the performances have definitely been on the up, long may it continue

What frustrates me is the urge to find negatives after a BIG win
Neither winks or Doherty were in the running to be MOTM. high have had some shockers this season too, but then who hasn’t (Kane was the worst player on the pitch vs Fulham and yet he is the best player in the league IMO)
So we should just enjoy the win, analyse anything that went wrong (the goal) and highlight what went right

Having now watched the goals again, how livid would we be if our defenders gave attackers as much space as Bale and Kane got for the 1st and 4th goals? Poor defending or good movement? Maybe a bit of both.

It's probably also a result of attacking in numbers with several goal threats - can't double up on Kane, Sonny AND Bale! Demands high concentration levels from opposing defenders, all game.
