we've got cover - we could have used Townsend as the nearest like-for-like wide player to replace Bale rather than shoehorning in a CM to play wide.
at least that way we keep the balance and shape.

I agree with you and Spaceman - we should have used Townsend (I actually rate him a bit) but thats AVBs decision - thats why I thought he fudged up a bit.

My observations from the game:
1. Chelsea have a very very good midfield.
2. When Hudd went off, and Livermore came on we began to struggle to keep track of their midfield. (which seems odd, but I thought Thudd did a very solid job defensively today).
3. Siggy and Dempsey, look a little below the quality we need, and both lost the ball far too easily today.
4. For everything that Defoe does well, I still think we lose more in overall team play than we gain by playing him as a lone striker.
5. I'm still not convinved about AVB. He makes some strange decisions. Why not play Townsend as like for like for Bale (well more so than out of position Dempsey at least). Why not put Lennon vs Ivanovic rather than vs the speedier and better defender in Cole. Why not play Ade? Or Loris come to that? Why not start 4-4-2 at home?

Because they didnt outclass us in any way, shape or form.
All 4 goals we conceded were our own mistakes.
If you look at the statistics you'll see how close it actually was.
We had 26 attempts at goal, they had 10. We were more lethal in the attacking third on more occasions than them.
Infact the only thing they dominated us was on possession, but the majority of their possession was in their own third!
To say we were 'outclassed in every aspect' is completely ridiculous and a massive kneejerk on the hugely over exxagorated scoreline.

Sorry but statistics mean fudge all to me. They dominated most of the game and looked like they could go up another gear if need be. Even in AVB's post match interview he pretty much admitted they deserved the win.

Hmmm...he was better, simply because AVB switched him and Dempsey, who by proxy was also better second-half. I still think we need much more quality in that specific position when Dembele is hurt.

I'm not too disappointed. Knew we'd struggle when I heard we wouldn't have Bale and Dembele. Plus they had to end their bad run at WHL eventually. They outplayed us in spells, but Friedel didn't have to make too many saves. It's not like they battered us. 4-2 is very flattering to them.

Lennon and Defoe I thought had excellent games, Verts was good again, Siggy defo better on the left but still feel we shouldve brought on Townsend to run at the booked Ivanovic or move across Lennon, some strange decisions from AVB
Losing Bale & Dembele was huge, CFC wouldnt have been the same attacking wise without say Mata and Hazard / Torres / Oscar, those 3 werent great for me
Obviously gutted to lose but given the nature of the performance with the two class players missing I dont feel too fudging off performance wise
Spurs fans apart from a 20 minute spell were utter brick again today, the atmosphere we once had has gone for good I feel now
