But can they pay? I wouldn't be surprised if they fail to see out the 3 years. And it seems the companies that can pay are often in some way questionable

Nothing questionable about crypto, its brilliant has quite literally saved my life by helping me afford very expensive medical procedures.
The amount of energy used to put on football matches over the average weekend in the entire English football pyramid from the stadiums to the transportation of fans and workers far out weighs the energy consumption of mining crypto.I’m glad it’s helped you but it most certainly is questionable. It’s dodgy as fudge. Uses a ridiculous amount of energy. No one understands it. Ponzi scheme.

What is all that power getting used for? Surely computers dont use huge amounts of energy. I thought the days of massive mainframes with cooling fans was over? No. In 2023 crypto used 121 terrawatts of energy. A large football stadium consumes around 15000 kws of energy a year. A terrawatt is 1 billion kilowatts. So crypto is equivalent to over 8 million football stadiums. There are just over 2000 stadiums with capacities of over 10k in the world. Even considering transport, football doesn't come close.

There's one crypto (Bitcoin) which does use a lot of energy but none of the others use significant amounts. The majority of bitcoin miners run on renewable energy and some contribute the surplus back to the grid.
