Next Manager?

Wasn't he a bit of a shambles at Madrid and then sacked from the national job mid tournament?

Doesn't do it for me on paper tbh

He was sacked as manager of Spain just before the World Cup started because Real Madrid announced he’d be taking over as their manager after the World Cup ended and the Spanish FA weren’t happy about the timing. He lasted about 3 months at RM.
He’s done well at Sevilla. Top 4 and won EL last year. Looking good for 4th in la liga this year.

Ok that's a little clearer regading the sacking

I'd like to hear about his management/coaching style because his CV isn't exactly stellar - 4th place with Sevilla? Meh

This is encouraging though:

"Lopetegui's problem was that he played possession based football and short passes with Real Madrid. But everyone knows that Madrid has always relied on long balls and crosses" - Xavi

Spoke to my Dad this morning and he said one of his old agent friends had told him that the Seville manager is the man that the Spurs hierarchy want and that the attraction is mutual.

He would be some step up from Rodgers or Potter.
His english is fine too unlike some of Italian candidates.

Also he played Bale at Real. He was Reguillon's manager at Sevilla.
He has long talked about wanting to manage in the Premier League.

That reads more like a dig at Real from a Barca legend than something to hang our hat on regarding the manager - easy to play a short passing game when you're in charge of a Spain team that has the best era of Barca bulking out your side

Sacked by Rayo, Porto and Real Madrid... ok he's done well with Sevilla but certainly sounds far more risky than many other candidates. Hardly a stand out career or anything to suggest he would be successful here with one decent managerial spell in his career. No thanks.

Well, Spain is top 3, everyone else fights for scraps ..

Yeah and Sevilla seem to always be in and around that fight for the scraps regardless of who the manager is - their DoF is the one who makes them tick, Monchi

This smacks of foreign name = better manager to me

He was 37 when he managed Rayo for a few games 18 years ago.

He went on to become a successful manager of Spain's underage teams. Losing 4 games in 4 years.

He got a Porto team with pretty avarage players to the quarter finals of the Champions League after winning their group with 14 points.
He won the first leg of that quarter final 3-1 against Guardiola's Bayern team.
Once bayern got 2 goals back at home Porto had to go for it and Bayern destroyed them on the break 6-1.
His card was marked then and lasted just another 6 months. He beat Mourinho's Chelsea on the way out.

Was unbeaten as Spanish manager over 20 matches.

Then Real literally fudged him over as only Real can. Thinking they were more important than the national team.
Instead of waiting until after the world cup to announce him as manager they had to fill the fan void post Zidane leaving.
They announced it 2 days before the World Cup.
Barcelona couldn't have a future Real manager managing Barcelona players and that was the end of that.
The FA sacked him and ruined their chances.
The same team that had won 9 and drawn 1 (Italy away) of their competive games drew with Morocco and went out on penalties to Russia.

Obviously the Real job went to brick.
It's hard enough at the best of times but when you have players and fans blaming you for their World Cup fudge up that summer where do you go.
Add to that Ronaldo left Real that summer and he had to get a Ronaldo dependant team to play without him.

He has been superb with Sevilla winning the Europa last season beating Roma, United, Wolves and Conte's Inter along the way.
This season they were bang in the title race until last week. They have Champions League secured again for next season.
This in a League where the top 3 have way money than the rest of the League.

And he plays the right type of football. He was a player under Cruyff at Barcelona.

Maybe we could have Monchi too while we’re at it!

Monchi was one of the most sought-after DoFs in Europe for years before he eventually left Sevilla for Roma in 2017. He only lasted 2 years there though and overall it sounds like his performance there was regarded as a disaster.

Thanks

Saved me having to write that all out.

He would be an excellent choice.

Because he won some european knockout matches? I'm not seeing a lot in that write up to get excited about, his 'achievements' aren't much to write home about so I'd want to hear about what type of coach/manager he is, what type of football his teams play and why that would translate to doing well at Spurs?

He's managed Spain, Real Madrid & Porto - winning nothing and won a EL with Sevilla, a competition that one of Arteta or Solskjar are likely to win this season. A bit of a nothing CV on paper, so what are the details beyond that, that make him a good choice?

appreciate this write up, i may not necessarily agree with him joining still but good stuff explaining the ins/outs.
