New York City

Do one of your must do's everyday then go with the flow for the rest of the day. There is so much to see and do, and most of it you will never have heard of and stumble on, that you will never fit it all in.
Le Parker meridien hotel on west 57th street has a burger bar behind a curtain in the lobby that sells great cheap burgers. It's always queued, is tiny but it's great and if you didn't know it was there you would never find it.
Enjoy you lucky beggars!!

Let us hope they sell veggie burgers! :)

I live here boys .. so can give advice, it is a great city.

Re catching Spurs games, no issue, NY Spurs pub is pretty close to Grand Central Station, so if you want the full experience, go there. However EPL games can been seen on NBC tv, even in most hotels and lots of bars/pubs will carry games.

If you want ideas, let me know what your interests are, if you have missus/etc.

My pal is going to NYC next week on business, where is the best place to see lots of gash ??? i.e Titty Bars

No fun in that, my advice to joe is make sure you have a massive new York burger whilst you are there. You're going for four days which is 12 meals. For every day you go without a nice burger I will eat three times the amount you would have, so if you want to save the animals you best do as I say. Trust me, you'll be hunting the things your self once you get a taste for it!

Also, without meaning to make a boring suggestion you should definantly check out the empire state building. Never actually been there myself but know plenty who have and they said it's amazing looking out from on top of it. Wouldn't be my cup of tea mind, get me to the 8th floor and I'd be bricking it and throwing up. :)

You want obnoxious NY burgers -> http://www.theoldhomesteadsteakhouse.com/themes/theme519/images/menu/DINNER_MENU_112613.pdf take a look at that menu, the steaks are ok .. the 20oz Kobe Burger ... way to go.

You can't go to NYC and not eat meat, it's sacrilegious.
Oh that burger place I mentioned( it doesn't have a name!!) only sells burgers and fries or cheese burgers and fries.

If you're going ESB, get there for when it opens, as the queues only get worse as the day goes on.
If you want to avoid the queues going up the Statue of Liberty, get the metro and walk back over the Brooklyn bridge for the view.
These tips could be out of date as its a while since I went.

We will be staying in The Renaissence in Times Square. How easy is it to get to places like Ground Zero etc and these would need to be booked in advance (ie whilst in UK) or just go as the day goes on whilst out there?

When we went you had to book a month in advance to go up the statue of liberty something to with anti terror. So we just walked round the base of it got back on the boat and went and had a look at the museum at the next stop.

Staton Island ferry. Low cost (maybe even free??) and get great views of the Manhatten skyline. Haven't a clue about Staton Island itself, never got off the ferry :)

Ground Zero is easy to get to from Times Square and is definitely worth a trip. Go on the organised tour as well, because the tour guide will be somebody connected to the events on the day, i.e. a survivor, a witness or somebody who lost a loved one. We were lucky enough to have a guy called Joe Torillo when we did it. 2,996 people died, and he was actually declared number 2,997 as they thought he was dead. He was eventually pulled from the rubble alive several days later and was the last person to be recovered from the wreckage still alive. He was a fire fighter and was in one of the towers when it collapsed. His story is amazing, but I'm sure listening to any of the stories from any of the other guides would be an amazing and emotional experience. It'll be different from when I did it as well because they were still building the freedom tower when I was there so the whole place was still a massive building site.

Somebody mentioned Liberty Island. It's true, this has to be booked in advance or they won't let you go up the statue. We just had a walk around the island instead because we weren't sure which day we were going to go so couldn't book up in advance. For the best views of Manhattan, take the Staten Island ferry, (it's free) and just do a return trip to the island and back. It's about 20-30 minutes each way but it's much better than paying for one of the harbour cruises and also goes right past Liberty Island and Ellis Island. I don't know if there's anything worth seeing on Staten Island, we just got off the ferry, walked around the barrier and got straight back on it again.

For food, someone has already mentioned Katz's deli. It is a must do, but I agree if you don't eat meat then it's a bit pointless because they are famous for their salt beef and pastrami. For the Empire State Building, get there before it opens so that you get up nice and early and before the queues build up. It's just round the corner from Grand Central Station so it's best to get the metro to GCS to see that, and then walk over to the ESB. Wrap up warm too, because it's f*****n freezing at the top because of the wind.

I remembered something else from 1995/1996; we went to Times Square for New Year's Eve, to see a ball drop, because it is tradition. Along with a million other people. This was massively against my better instincts but I was young and my girlfriend at the time was adamant we had to do it. I recall standing in the world's biggest crowd/queue with no food or drink for three hours in freezing temperatures, and then eventually, agonisingly, the big metal ball dropped down the pole, to signify it was midnight and we could go home. Woop de doo. Then we turned round to join the queue of people shuffling slowly home and someone threw a pot of wee over the crowd from an apartment above us. And we walked home slowly from Times Square right down near the bottom of Manhattan, which took hours, in the freezing cold, smelling a bit of wee, back to our mice and ****roaches. Halcyon days.

The following year I stayed in the UK in a pub and had a way better time with all my mates; I remember hugging a man in a Spurs shirt at midnight.

When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.

Thanks for the tips and advice everyone.

Still umming and ahhing about whether or not to forego 22 years of vegetarianism and have my first taste of meet in NYC!

We were there for New Years and went to the Theatre NYE with the plan to go to Times Square for the ball drop - however, having seen the crowds already gathered at 11am when we walked to the theatre and the crush when we came out we decided to kick back at the hotel and watch it - had to walk four block out of our way to get back to the hotel mind!
