Moussa Sissoko

Let's leave off the guy shall we? Herd mentality at its finest.

He hasn't even played against UTD and it's just not funny anymore (if it ever was)

fudging disgraceful treatment, he's a Tottenham player last time I checked.
Let's leave off the guy. Let's ignore the apparent correlation between him being in our team and our performances and results suffering.

Look at his last four starts. A win against AFC Wimbledon, draws against Newport, West Ham and Southampton. Going back a bit further we did win against Burnley, Brighton and APOEL, but lost against Arsenal and Leicester. Wins against Palace and Real. Losses against Manu and West Ham.

Let's leave off him? That wouldn't be said for many other players performing like he has I think.

I have no issues with legitimate criticism, if and when it's warranted. No issues at all.

But the ongoing slating of a player across almost every thread on this forum is simply pathetic.

Completely agree let's review footballers

I’ll hold my hands up to that actually, in the last week. You’re right, should be stuck in here.

For what it’s worth, at the games I’ll back him to the hilt, my criticism’s of him are just for the message board and pubs.

Transitioned quite well last night with out him last night.

A replacement for him and a proper back up for Dembele is needed in the summer

This would be a classic GG myth.

He's played the majority of the game against Real Madrid at home, arguably a much better side than United and with greater Champions League pedigree, and we won one of our biggest games of all time. He's started against Everton away (3-0 win), Burnley away (3-0 win, and they were in great form at the time), and West Ham away (racing into a 3-0 lead before Aurier gets sent off and we hold on for 3-2). In the games we have lost, save for Leceister away, there have been players that contributed far more to attacks breaking down through silly losses of possession, ruining our tempo.

He is a squad player that has done well for a squad player. Of course, we get the Dembele from yesterday into the team then it is an absolute no brainer to have him in the side ahead of Sissoko. Same if Winks can come back and reach his highest level and we have no other considerations like fitness and conditioning to worry about. I don't think anyone is denying that. Sissoko is a squad player, but for goodness sake, why does he get such irrational hate? Why does one of the best performances of the Poch era have to be used as an excuse to bash him? We have played well with him and we will play well without him. There is no logic or basis for the argument that he is as bad as some are making out, 'ruining our tempo', when we've played some great stuff with him in the side and he's been a big contributor.

The reason we played well against United was in large part due to the fact that we had every single player on top form, winning their individual battles. That starts from Trippier at the back right up through to Kane. Everyone was confident, everyone faced their man up, everyone won their battle. I don't doubt Dembele has a higher technical ceiling than Sissoko but we played so well yesterday because all over the pitch, everyone was on top form. To try and state that this all happened because Sissoko wasn't there is frankly ridiculous.

There is no hate. And there is no irrationality.

Actually there is anything but irrationality. people look at what Sissoko provides to the team with a rational mind. People look at parameters like successful crosses, shots on goal, threatening shots on goal, successful tough passes, easy passes, movement on the ball, movement without the ball, positioning, awareness, work rate, attacking flow of the team, quality of pressing, quantity of pressing and so on. And they look for patterns. Are the results all to chance?

Sissoko scores OK on several of these, sub-par on many and abysmal on some.

The conclusion for the rational mind is that Sissoko is not good enough for a club like Tottenham.

Yes, he has the occasional good match, where good means he has some good actions, but still all the bad ones linger.

successful crosses, shots on goal, threatening shots on goal, successful tough passes, - all things you would be grading an attacker on. Although I'd say if he had better passing range / better ability to play more incisive passes in tight areas, he'd be more of a first 11 pick as opposed to a squad player. But this is where he falls down from Dembele and Winks.

easy passes, movement on the ball, movement without the ball - he's absolutely fine here.

positioning, awareness, work rate - he's very good here.

attacking flow of the team, quality of pressing, quantity of pressing and so on - he's good here.

He's good enough to be a squad player for us, which is exactly what he is. The irrationality comes from a load of people (not just here, everywhere online) going 'lol he's brick mate' even when he's been nowhere near the worst player on the pitch. Then the retort is 'but those other players have played well before, Sissoko never has' to which neither Poch trying to explain it or anyone else trying to explain that actually, he does ok in our team actually makes the blindest bit of difference.

He may well get sold to West Ham this summer. Until that point, can we be decent people and support him like he's our player? Look at him for what he is, a squad player that has played his part, and I'm sure people will get a lot less angry. It has felt so good supporting Spurs right now because we are all united as one - from board room, to coaching staff, to players, to fans. Everyone is agreed on the strategy. Everyone is pulling in the same direction. And everyone wants to be here. The fact that we all get behind the team and that there is such a positive atmosphere does in some way contribute to players feeling like they are part of something, which gives them confidence to continue to buy into the plan that enables us to overachieve and gives us a better chance of keeping them for longer. It is light years away from the 90s, the early 00s, and it's much better than even the Jol or Harry years. Everyone wants to be here, everyone is playing their part, and that includes us.

Let's just be decent people and treat the guy fairly for what he is rather than looking for any excuse to pile in. It's completely unsavory when absolutely every other player doesn't have to deal with it. He's not Ghaly. He's not Danny Rose. He's not a Kaboul or an Adebayor. He's not as bad as a raft of players we had through the 90s. He is hard working. He's been doing his job and he's ours. Let's be better.

I disagree with your evaluation of his skill sets. I won't repeat as it has already been said many times in the thread.

People get angry because in a possession style team, you need footballers - players who have perfect control of the ball. Sissoko does not fit the bill.

Giving footballers a feeling they are part of something and confidence to overachieve is important. The key is that the player must be able to overachieve, make the sum greater than the parts. Sissoko has proven himself to be incapable of being such a player. Give the role to somebody who has potential to be this player. It is not Sissoko.

Yesterday Sissoko came on to fulfill a task he was qualified to do. Tottenham 2 - 0 up. 5 minutes left. Dele Alli may get a red, so Dele Alli off and Sissoko on and we possibly escaped a red card. Sissoko got to fulfill his potential.

I'm sure he'll get a fresh start for West Ham in the summer.

Given recent events at the caravan site, I'd hardly think that's likely.

So, I'll take that as an ardent 'no'. You must have some kinda time to spare to be ceaselessly prowling this Sissoko thread, in order to promptly bat back the merest hints of approval for him. I'm sure Moussa is flattered. Be fun to see you two sort it out in person:

I'll just wear a football shaped mask and he'll keep failing to make any kind of proper contact.

And in a flexible system based largely on physicality, you need athletes too. Sissoko plugs a number of holes and allows us to play a high tempo style because of how he can keep going. He isn't the greatest player but he is a good squad option for those reasons. In a possession based team, we've had a number of great wins and performances where he has played his part.

I disagree. Sissoko is too big and slow to plug holes effectively. Plugging holes is still what he's best at.

Also we can't play high tempo style with a midfielder standing still watching our offensive players do their stuff. He occupies area which our team mates cannot enter or pass through. High tempo style also needs pin point accuracy on the ball, which Sissoko is everything but.
