I think they are stat based, but the weighting of different stats can skew things, like Lamela's miss. There two West Ham players in their team of the week and that was a terrible game.

Assuming he would otherwise have rated 7 that's two points deducted for the miss. The shot was on target ffs, had the goalie dived the wrong way he'd have scored.

He had a great game as usual. Who gives a brick some fudging algorithm on a stats for dummies website whoscored.com give him -2 for the keeper going the right way for a penalty. They didn't give Son a -3 for being a greedy clam and acting as if his teammate was gonna miss the penalty.
As for City they aren't as good as Liverpool, Everton or Monaco based on this. They've beaten no one yet neither, only the bottom 4 in the league, 13th and 6th.
